MEDFORD, MA. - It was another day and another win over a ranked opponent for the No. 5 Wesleyan women's tennis team as they took out No. 11 Tufts University in a 6-1 NESCAC victory on Saturday afternoon, continuing the team's 13-game win streak and the eighth win over a Top 20 program from the Gantcher Center.
Undefeated in NESCAC play, the Cardinals (13-1 overall, 6-0 NESCAC) remain hot as they rank second in the conference behind only Middlebury who also sit 6-0. With four matches remaining in the regular season, the Cardinals and the Panthers will face off on April 26.
The Cardinals dropped just one doubles match to the Jumbos (12-4 overall, 4-3 NESCAC) on the morning, picking up the first point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. The top pairing of
Sarah Youngberg '26 and
Lane Durkin '27 hashed out business as usual and put away a 6-2 win over Stephanie Woodbury and Natalie Wu. Holding off the Jumbos for a 6-4 win,
Lucinda Gatsiounis '28 and
Alexandra Burnett '27 defeated Melanie Woodbury and Lucy Mitchell.
Never satisfied with just doubles success, Durkin was the first to victory in singles play at No. 2. Durkin took Ellie Gershaw to a 6-1, 6-2 match final. Facing Mitchell in the No. 3 slot, Youngberg was solid for a 6-1, 6-3 win.
Melanie Woodbury took
Jackie Soloveychik '27 to task in the top spot, managing five game wins over both sets but it was Soloveychik that closed each set at six and came away with the 6-3, 6-2 tally. Re-entering the lineup at No. 5,
Macie Carlos '27 remains a steady threat for the Cardinals when in play and was quick to victory as she went 6-3, 6-2 over Hu.
Falling in set one to Brooklyn Bindas, Gatsiounis rallied to force a third set after she tied the match up with a set two takeover. Bindas did not make the win easy, taking Gatsiounis to a second set tiebreaker before Gatsiounis could even claim the tie match. Gatsiounis won the match, walking away with a 4-6, 7-6 (12-10), 1-0 (10-6) finish.
The Cardinals return to action on Sunday, April 13, when they face Bates in a 10 a.m. NESCAC showdown.
