No. 5 Women’s Tennis Collects Clean Sweep of Bates on the Road

LEWISTON, ME. – Running 14 match wins in a row, the Wesleyan women's tennis team put away another NESCAC victory to remain unbeaten as the team swept Bates College 7-0 with nine match wins on Sunday morning from the Merrill Gymnasium.

As has been the theme all season, the Cardinals' (14-1 overall, 7-0 NESCAC) underclassmen carried the team a perfect match score while led by Sarah Youngberg '26 as the No. 3. Youngberg was the fourth point of the morning over the Bobcats (5-12 overall, 3-5 NESCAC) , facing Olivia Gidlow in a quick match that ended with Youngberg on top with a 6-1, 6-2 final.

Following the Cardinals' doubles sweep, Natalia Leroy '28 laid out a clean sweep at No. 4 against Lizzie Frekko. Leroy did not allow a single point from Frekko and finished 6-0, 6-0. Lane Durkin '27 resumed her streak as the No. 2, now running 15 match wins in a row as she defeated Elise Hepburn 6-4, 6-0.

Taken to extra games in set one, Jackie Soloveychik '27 was able to fend off Isabella Saul and only allowed one more point, earning the 7-5, 6-1 win for the Cardinals at No. 1. Dropping just one game to Ava Steinberger, Lucinda Gatsiounis '28 was quick to end her match with a 6-0, 6-1 final as the No. 6.

Sitting as the No. 5, Macie Carlos '27 rallied back from a set one setback to Ava Lyon as she fell by just two points only to win set by the same mark. Now facing a third set tiebreak, Carlos threw down for a 10-4 win and a 4-6, 6-4, 10-4 final victory.

Gatsiounis and Alexandra Burnett '27 began the morning with a  win as the No. 3 doubles pairing, marking a 6-1 win over Lyon and Steinberger. The top pairing of Youngberg and Durkin defeated Gidlow and Frekko with a 6-2 tally. And topping off the first portion of the match, Soloveychik and Leroy picked up a 6-3 win over Saul and Hepburn.

The Cardinals return home to Middletown on Saturday, April 19, when they host Trinity at 2 p.m.
