SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Competing in a tournament that included all eight NESCAC programs, the Wesleyan women's golf team showed very well as the Cardinals placed fifth out of 13 total teams at the Jack Leaman Invitational hosted by Amherst College on Sunday at The Orchards Golf Course.
Wesleyan, who came into the competition ranked No. 35 nationally, finished third among NESCAC schools and ahead of three teams (Bowdoin, Hamilton, Babson) ranked ahead of the Cardinals in the national rankings. The only teams to finish ahead of Wesleyan are all ranked inside the Top 11 nationally, with NYU taking the title.
As a team, the Cardinals finished with a 317 (+29) while
Amanda Phillips '28 and
Mia Holbrook '27 led the way as both tied for seventh place out of 74 golfers on the player leaderboard. Phillips was consistent throughout, carding 11 pars with birdies on two of the four par 5's on the course. Holbrook also had 11 pars while she eagled the par 5 13
th hole to finish with a 37 (+1) on the back 9. Each finished with a 76 (+4) in the one-round tournament, which was shortened due to unplayable conditions on Saturday.
Next to finish was
Kayla Howell '26 as the junior finished in a tie for 30
th with an 82 (+10) while
Nicole Lee '28 was right behind in a tie for 36
th place with an 83 (+11).
Rebecca Roegner '28 rounded out the scoring lineup with an 86 while
Cecilia Roegner '27 posted a round of 84.
The Cardinals, who only finished behind Amherst and Williams on the team leaderboard, are back in action on April 19-20 at the Williams Spring Invitational at the Taconic Golf Club in Williamstown.
