WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – In the final tune-up before the NESCAC Championship, the Wesleyan women's golf team battled brutal weather conditions in round 2 to finish in a tie for sixth place out of 10 teams at the Williams Spring Invitational. The Cardinals shot 321-324-645 as a team in the two-day tournament.
After playing in 70-degree weather with 15-20 mph winds in round 1on Saturday, teams had to deal with 30-40 mph wind gusts on Sunday and the conditions certainly affected the scoring. The average shot discrepancy between the two rounds was 12.8 strokes, but the Cardinals had a differential of just three strokes, which was the lowest of any of the 10 teams in the field.
Amanda Phillips '28 turned in a team-leading performance that saw her finish in a tie for fourth place out of 60 golfers on the player leaderboard. She fired in a first round 77 (+6) before shooting a 76 (+5) second round where she had 10 pars including six with one birdie on the back 9. Phillips moved up 13 places on the player leaderboard overnight to give herself a Top 5 finish.
Mia Holbrook '27 moved up 10 sports between rounds, finishing in a tie for 14
th place overall with a 79-80-159 finish. Holbrook was steady throughout on Saturday, recording 11 pars including a streak of eight holes in a row from holes 5-12. Holbrook followed with two birdies on Sunday, breaking par on the par 4 7
th hole and par 5 18
th.
Kayla Howell '26 was outstanding in the brutal weather on Sunday, finishing with a 78 (+7) to move her up 13 places on the player leaderboard between days to finish in a tie for 35
th place. Howell's second round 78 was tied for the eighth-lowest round of any player in the field on Sunday. Howell had nine pars and two birdies in round 2.
Rounding out the lineup for the Cardinals was
Rebecca Roegner '28 who finished with 80-90-170 for the weekend while
Rosie Leonard '26 went 86-90-176 over the two rounds.
The Cardinals finish out the season on May 2-4 with the NESCAC Championship held at the Yahnundasis Country Club in New Hartford, New York.
