Cardinal Pitching Staff Dominates Again, Leading Wesleyan to Sweep of WestConn

Wesleyan allows just one run in 14 innings on Thursday

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Three pitchers combined to allow just one run across 14 innings on Thursday, leading the Wesleyan softball team to a sweep of WestConn in non-conference action. The Cardinals (22-10) defeated the Wolves (20-16) by scores of 3-1 and 6-0 as Wesleyan has won seven of their past nine games.

WestConn scored their only run in the 1st inning of game one when the Wolves recorded four hits, all of which were singles, to ultimately plate one run on a sacrifice bunt.

Wesleyan responded in their first at-bats as Rebecca Cassel-Siskind '26 singled to center, stole second, then came around to score on a Isabella Secaira-Cotto '25 RBI single to center. Later with two outs, Abby Orso G'25 stepped to the plate and drove in Secaira-Cotto with a double out to center to hand Wesleyan the 2-1 lead.

Secaira-Cotto worked out of a jam in the 2nd inning, getting a double play ball to Molly Lennon '26 at second base who threw to Waverly Smart '27 covering second who gunned down the batter at first. The senior pitcher worked 1-2-3 innings in the 3rd and 5th while she helped her own cause in the bottom of the 5th, lofting a sacrifice fly out to center field to score Lennon from third.

Orso relived Secaira-Cotto with one out in the 6th inning and she got a sacrifice bunt out back to the circle before finishing off the frame with a strikeout. Orso then worked a 1-2-3 7th inning to seal the 3-1 win in game one.

Cassel-Siskind went 2-for-3 at the plate while Orso had a double and walked, reaching base safely in two of her three plate appearances. Secaira-Cotto went 5.1 innings allowing just one run while Orso picked up her first save as a Cardinal, throwing 1.2 perfect innings in relief.

Game two saw Jacelyn Lees '28 deal a hammer blow to the Wolves' chances, as she allowed just five hits with no walks, throwing a complete game shutout with five strikeouts. For Lees, this is her fifth shutout in 12 starts this season, while her earned run average sits at 1.13 in 80.1 innings in her rookie season.

In a repeat of game one, Wesleyan plated two runs in the bottom of the 1st inning, with Cat Palmer '26 hitting a two-out RBI triple to left center before Orso stepped up with a run-scoring single to center to make it 2-0 Cardinals.

Lees worked perfect innings in three of the first four in game two, running into some trouble in the 5th inning but she got an inning-ending strikeout to leave two Wolves baserunners on.

The Cardinals tacked on runs in the 4th and 5th innings. Kelly Baker '27 had an RBI single through the left side of the infield in the 4th while Palmer drove in pinch runner Bella Tassone '24, G'25 with a single to center in the 5th.=

Ruby Stewart '27 and Malia Apor '28 opened the 6th inning with consecutive singles and the Cardinals later scored two more runs on an error by the WestConn center fielder.

Eight Cardinals had at least one hit in game two with Palmer leading the way going 2-for-3 with 2 RBI. Orso also went 2-for-3 with 1 RBI and Lees went 2-for-3 at the plate.

The Cardinals next head to Trinity for a NESCAC doubleheader on Sunday starting at Noon.
