AMHERST, Mass. –
Dylan Green '26 played the role of overtime hero for the five-seed Wesleyan women's lacrosse team who topped the four-seed Amherst 11-10 in overtime in the NESCAC Quarterfinal round. The Cardinals (12-4) advance to the NESCAC Semifinal round for the fifth consecutive season while the Mammoths (11-5) await their NCAA Tournament fate.
After these two sides played to a triple overtime thriller in the regular season, the second iteration between the Little 3 rivals lived up to the billing. Much like the contest back on April 2 that saw Amherst pull out a 9-8 triple overtime win in Middletown, the Cardinals built up an early lead only to see the Mammoths turn it on in the second half before scoring a last second equalizer in the fourth quarter.
Rewind back to the first quarter where Wesleyan set the tone, outscoring Amherst 4-2 in the frame. After Amherst scored on their first possession, Wesleyan held the Mammoths scoreless for the next 13:27 minutes.
Mya Waryas '27 got the Cardinals on the board more than midway through the quarter and
Elle Priesing '26 and Green scored on consecutive possessions to make it 3-1 Wesleyan. The two sides traded goals in the final minute of the period to give Wesleyan a 4-2 lead after one.
The second quarter saw Wesleyan hold Amherst without a goal.
Izzy Weintraub '26 made three saves while the only goal in the quarter was scored by
Becca Dibble '26 on a free position shot with Wesleyan playing a player down. Dibble's goal with 1:20 left in the half gave Wesleyan a 5-2 halftime lead.
Bridget Darcy broke Amherst out of their goal-less drought on the first possession of the third quarter, but turnovers then plagued the Mammoths who turned the ball over on each of their next four possessions.
Kiara Tangney '25 then fired in consecutive free positions goals just 59 seconds apart to hand Wesleyan their largest lead of the game at 7-3.
Amherst scored three of the final four goals in the third quarter, making it an 8-6 game heading into the fourth.
Addie Cummings '26 fired in a much-needed marker 54 seconds into the fourth quarter, but the Mammoths followed with three unanswered goals to tie the score with 5:58 left in regulation.
Waryas made a play to break up the Amherst scoring run, scoring a go-ahead goal with 4:38 left on the clock. Weintraub then made a big stop on Mia Raven with 1:46 left to hand the ball back to the Cardinals. Looking to drain out the clock, Wesleyan was playing keep away but a turnover with 30 seconds left gave the ball back to the Mammoths. Pushing the pace upfield, Petersen netted the game-tying goal with just 11 seconds showing to send the game into overtime.
Green won the opening draw of overtime, but the Cardinals were not able to generate a shot on offense.
Maeve Olson '25 then made a play on Rachel Rogers, forcing a turnover to give the ball back to the Cardinals who had a free position shot from Cummings blocked to the side.
After flipping sides, Green again won a crucial draw control to restart play and on that possession, she beat two defenders before firing in the game-winning goal to send the Cardinals past the Mammoths in the 11-10 win.
Green scored three for her second career playoff hat trick. She added three draw controls to her totals. Tangney stuffed the stat sheet with two goals, three caused turnovers, three draw controls, and three ground balls.
Priesing (two goals, one assist) and Dibble (one goal, two assists) each had three points to lead a balanced attack that saw four Cardinals score at least twice.
Olson and
Lindsey Diomede '26 each had two caused turnovers and two ground balls.
Lilly Stoller '26 tied with Tangney for the team-lead with three ground balls.
Next up for the Cardinals is a trip to Vermont to face the top-seed Middlebury in the semifinal round. Wesleyan gave the Panthers all they could handle in a 10-9 regular season loss in Middletown in a game the Cardinals led 8-6 late in the third quarter.
