Baseball Swept by Williams in Senior Day Doubleheader

MIDDLETOWN, CT. – Plating two home runs for the Wesleyan baseball team on Sunday afternoon, Evan Diaz '25 was the star of senior day as Wesleyan fell in NESCAC action to Williams College 7-5 in game one and 4-3 in game two during the NESCAC West matchup from Dresser Diamond in the final home game of the season.

The Ephs (16-13 overall, 7-5 NESCAC West) swept the series after a win on Friday night gave them a one-game lead over the Cardinals (10-22 overall, 2-10 NESCAC West), but it was Diaz that concluded the weekend with four home runs and nine RBI.

Opening game one with nearly three scoreless innings, it was the Ephs that were first to the board at Dresser, scoring on a double hit out to right field. After a pitching change for the Ephs to begin the bottom of the fourth, Tyler Cosgrove'25  singled down to left field, advancing as Jonah Timmons '27 was walked. Cosgrove tied the game up at one run with the help of Connor Sullivan's '26 ball to left field. Timmons reached third on an error by the third baseman, giving the Cardinals their first lead of game one after James Marsden '26 cuffed a ball to second base.

Another pitching change for the Ephs was all Jack Carpenter '25 needed to reach, nailing a double out left. Cosgrove followed, giving Carpenter the necessary room to score with his own double out into left field. Facing the top of the sixth inning, the Ephs took a one-run lead, scoring three times to catch the Cardinals before another three runs would be put up in the seventh.

An error at third base pushed Sullivan to reach as the first baserunner at the bottom of the final inning, but it was Diaz that drove a home run pitch down over the fence in right field to send both players home.

David Tirrell '25 takes the loss, pitching six innings. Tirrell struck out five batters while allowing seven runs.

Game two was another slow start to the scoring as neither team was able to advance past second base. The Ephs were again the first to score but the lead was short lived for the time being. With Cosgrove and Timmons on base, Diaz earned the triple RBI with a home run ball that blew along the right field line.

The Cardinals would hold the lead for another three innings, the Ephs tying the game up in the seventh at three. With just half an inning remaining in regulation, the Ephs scored on a passed ball, sweeping the Cardinals through the weekend series.

While Cole Perkin '28 takes the loss from the mound with two innings pitched and just one run allowed. Marsden pitched six innings, allowing three runs while striking out five.

The Cardinals return to action on Tuesday, April 29, when they head to Hartford for a 3:30 p.m. regular season finale.
