Baseball Falls as Middlebury Sweeps Series in 11-4 Final

MIDDLEBURY. VT. – Taking a hit in the final game of the weekend road series, the Wesleyan baseball team fell in NESCAC action on Sunday afternoon to Middlebury College in an 11-4 defeat that saw Middlebury take all three games of the series in a sweep.

Down 2-0 to start the second inning, Evan Diaz '25 was walked on the second at bat of the inning for the Cardinals (7-13 overall, 2-4 NESCAC) but garnered a run for the lineup on the next hit. Luke LaSaracina '25 nailed a home run out and over right center field, tying the game at two. Troy Ashkinos '28 reached first base on a fielder's choice but was left on base.

In the bottom half of the second inning, the Panthers (13-9 overall, 4-1 NESCAC) gained a four-run lead with two doubles in a row from their batting lineup before Kyle McCausland homered down the left field line for the double RBI.

Now up five runs after a run in the fourth inning, the Panthers held the Cardinals without a run heading into the top of the sixth. Jake Acker '27 advanced to first after Nico Tambascia made contact with the sophomore but Acker was pushed to second on another hit by pitch, this time Jonah Timmons '27. Hitting a single down the line in left field, Jack Carpenter '25 gave Acker enough space to round third and score his 18th run of the season.

Ben Slaughter struck a home run over the glove of Ashkinos in left field, bringing the Panthers' lead to five for a second time. The Panthers' final runs of the game fell at the bottom of the seventh, reaching nine on a sacrificed fly before Anthony Pellegrini stole home from the Cardinals. Carter Chi scored the final on a double by Slaughter.

Unlike the Panthers, the Cardinals still had one more run in them from Ernie Little '26 to top off the eighth. Little hammered a double along the left field line and would stay at second until Derek Lacey '28, pinch hitting for Timmons, would knock one down the middle to give Little the tally.

From the mound, the Cardinals saw David Tirrell '25 pitch just over five innings, marking three strike outs while allowing eight runs and two walks. James Marsden '26 relieved Tirrell in the sixth inning, allowing three earned runs on two hits, walking two.

The Cardinals return to action on Tuesday, April 8, when they travel to Ramapo College for a 4 p.m. start.
