#7 Men’s Tennis Knocked from NESCAC Championship by #2 Amherst, 4-2

MIDDLEBURY, VT. – Making their ninth NESCAC tournament appearance, the 19th ranked Wesleyan men's tennis team watched the conference run come to an end after clinching a key doubles point against No. 11 Amherst College, falling in the NESCAC quarterfinal round, 4-2, on Friday afternoon, from the courts at Middlebury College.

After earning a conference berth for the fourth year in a row, the Cardinals entered the NESCAC quarterfinal round as the seventh seed after completing their best regular season record outside of COVID-19 restrictions since 2019. The 9-7 (5-5 NESCAC) Cardinals traveled to Middlebury to face the 15-6 (7-3 NESCAC) Mammoths in the first round. The previous meeting between the clubs resulted in a 6-1 victory for the Mammoths on March 30.

Facing the daunting climb ahead of them, the Cardinals caught the Mammoths on the wrong foot as they opened doubles play with the upper hand. Facing Kobe Ellenbogan and Spencer Leung as the No. 2 doubles pairing, Brett Keeling '27 and Chase Kasday '26 allowed just two games from the Mammoths, finishing off the match with a 6-2 tally. With a duplicate score, the match at No. 3 ended in a 6-2 victory for Max Lustgarten '25 and Jex Frankel '27 over Sujit Chepuri and Albert Hu, earning the first point of the match.

Keeling would be the final point for the Cardinals on the afternoon, picking up a singles win at No. 4. Going head-to-head with Rex Harrison, Keeling was forced to a third set tiebreak. After taking set one, Keeling hit a stumbling block with Harrison after the match was tied up. Keeling ultimately won the match after set three went to a tie break, defeating Harrison 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7-3).

At No. 5, Kasday tied his match up at one with a set two tiebreak but was unable to fend off Chepuri in a 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 3-6 loss. Tai MacDonald '26 went three rounds with George Chaidemenos, winning set one before Chaidemenos won two in a row, 6-3, 3-6, 1-6 at No. 6. The match at No. 2 looked like a comeback in the making for Lustgarten. Lustgarten tied the match at one and was leading through set three before the Mammoths clinched the win, rendering the No. 2 unfinished.

Head coach Mike Fried extends his standing record with the men's tennis program to 109-87.
