Carlos Advances #2 Cardinals to NESCAC Semifinal, Sweeping #7 Colby

MIDDLETOWN, CT. – Sealing the sixth-ranked Wesleyan women's tennis team's seventh trip to the NESCAC semifinal round, Macie Carlos '27 was the deciding fourth point to end the NESCAC quarterfinal round in a 4-0 sweep of No. 33 Colby College on Saturday afternoon from the John Wood Memorial Courts.

With courts dry enough to open the first round of the NESCAC Tournament, the 17-2 (9-1 NESCAC) Cardinals took the 7-10 (4-6 NESCAC) Mules for a quick ride with the match ending with three unfinished singles matches. The previous meeting between the institutions resulted in a 7-0 sweep on March 9.

Setting victories in two of the three doubles matches, the Cardinals gained their opening lead with a point from No. 1 and No. 2. Sarah Youngberg '26 and Lane Durkin '27 wasted little time making sure they would walk away with a win. Facing Michaela Landry and Isabella Suk, the duo allowed only two points and cleared a defeat of the Mules at 6-2. A tight race to claim the doubles point played out on court two as Jackie Soloveychik '27 and Natalia Leroy '28 forced to a tiebreak with Ella Novion and Amelie Gal. Running the match up one more time, the pair closed out the 7-6 (7-5) victory.

Closing out the first point of singles play for the Cardinals, Durkin went toe-to-toe with Landry at No. 2 and put away a 6-0, 6-2 victory to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead. A quiet win at No. 6, Gatsiounis was the second win of the afternoon through singles, facing Abby Hess in a 6-1, 6-1 match final for the Cardinals. Sitting as the No. 5, Carlos dropped just one game to Suk and clinched the sweep for the Cardinals with a 6-0, 6-1 tally.

Matches 1, 3, 4, were rendered unfinished however, Leroy was just one game away from winning her match at 6-2, 5-1.

The Cardinals will face #3 Bowdoin on Saturday morning, May 3, in the NESCAC semifinal round with action beginning at 10 a.m.
