No. 6 Women’s Tennis Closes Season in NCAA Quarterfinal to No. 4 Pomona-Pitzer

CLAREMONT, CA. – Returning to the NCAA Tournament Elite 8 for the sixth time in program history, the No. 6 Wesleyan women's tennis team closed the 2025 season in a 4-0 loss to No. 4 Pomona-Pitzer on Tuesday morning as hard-fought comebacks remained in contention before Pomona-Pitzer reached the match-point to advance from the Biszants Family Tennis Center.

Running a 20-4 overall campaign this season, the Cardinals returned to the national spotlight for the 10th time as a program. Looking to redeem themselves after a loss in the 2024 NCAA National Championship, the Cardinals cruised through rounds two and three with 4-0 sweeps of Stevens and Carnegie Mellon after earning a bid for the tournament.

Facing the Sagehens for just the second time as a program and the first time since 2018, the Cardinals reached Claremont with plenty of fire to ignite.

Opening the morning with doubles play, the Cardinals took early leads in all three matches as they held off the Sagehens to near the halfway marker. Managing flips on all three courts, the Sagehens rebounded and claimed the early doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. At No. 3, Lauren Rha and Leticia Bazua Vazuez defeated Renna Mohsen-Breen '25 and Jackie Soloveychik '27 6-3 before  Nyakiriri Kanefu and Amelia Poor clinched the point at No. 2 with a 6-4 win over Natalia Leroy '28 and Alexandra Burnett '27.

Just as the match played through doubles, the Cardinals held steady leads at No. 1 and No. 6 through set one. On court one, Soloveychik was the leader up until the fifth point when Angie Zhou tied the set, forcing Soloveychik to extra games. Zhou prevailed in the tiebreak before ultimately earning the match point with a 7-6 (9-7), 6-0 final.

Down on No. 6, Mohsen-Breen returned to the singles lineup for the Cardinals for the first time this season and won the first set before being forced to a third-set tiebreak by Bazua Vazuez. As the match was declared a win for the Sagehens, Mohsen-Breen was leading Bazua Vazuez 1-0 with the final unfinished at 6-4, 2-6, 1-0.

Facing Rha at No. 2, Durkin tied the match up in set two without allowing Rha a single point. Heading into the tiebreak, Durkin was down two as the match was deemed unfinished by the Sagehens at 3-6, 6-0, 1-3. At No. 3, Youngberg was the third Cardinal in a tiebreak third set, downing Kanefu in set two to keep the Cardinals in contention. While abandoned with Sagehen's fourth point, Youngberg's match stood at 2-6, 6-2, 3-0.

The Sagehens earned the opening singles points at No. 4, Marissa Markey defeating Leroy 6-2, 6-4, and No. 5, Amelia Poor defeating Lucinda Gatsiounis '28 6-3, 6-2.

At the conclusion of the team tournament, Soloveychik and Durkin will compete in the NCAA Individual Championships in the singles draw while Durkin and Youngberg will compete in the doubles bracket. Action is set to begin May 24th at the Biszants Family Tennis Center in Claremont.
