Adams Nets Overtime Game-Winner to Lift No. 10 Field Hockey to 2-1 Win at Union

Cardinals improve to 3-0 for the third straight season

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – In a well-played game throughout, the No. 10 ranked Wesleyan field hockey team got an overtime game-winning goal from Georgia Adams '26 to lift the Cardinals to a 2-1 road win over Union on Wednesday night. With the win, Wesleyan improves to 3-0 for the third straight season while the Garnet Chargers drop to 3-2.

A lively start to this one saw Wesleyan take a 1-0 lead just five minutes into play. After forcing a turnover at midfield, the Cardinals quickly moved upfield with the ball finding the stick of Meera Patel '29 who carried just into the circle before feeding to her left to a wide open Leila Feldman '28. The sophomore had plenty of time to line up a shot which she lifted over the outstretched Union goalkeeper Tess Parker.

Union had an immediate answer to the Feldman goal as the Garnet Chargers converted on a penalty corner just 1:20 later. After the insert, a pass came to Bobbi Serino who played a ball towards goal that was deflected over Audrey Pace '26 and below the bar for the equalizer.

Wesleyan nearly retook the lead twice in a span of 1:30 as Patel had a shot trickle past Parker in net but saved off the line by Union defender Rowan Dapson. Then Patel was again denied, this time by Parker, while Adams hit the post in a frenzy in front of goal.

Patel again nearly found the net early in the second quarter as she received a ball and dribbled around three Union defenders before unleashing a shot with power that was denied by the right foot of Parker.

After a scoreless third quarter, the Cardinals looked to have taken the lead early in the fourth quarter when Kenzie Mauro '27 knocked home a loose ball in front. The referees had signaled for a goal initially but the pair came together and declared the ball had hit the leg of a Cardinal offensive player in the build-up, nullifying the would-be go-ahead goal.

Wesleyan went on to have six penalty corners in the fourth quarter, but all came and went without a goal as the score was still tied at 1-1 at the end of regulation.

The Cardinals controlled possession in the early stages of overtime, but Union held steady and later had a golden chance to score as Maddie Greco broke free, carried into the circle and put a shot on-goal that was turned aside by Pace. The senior goalkeeper then alertly spotted the loose ball and kicked it out of play to keep the score tied.

The game then took a deciding turn when the ball was reversed to Marley Procopio '29 on the near side who found Emily Smith '29 on an outlet pass near midfield. Smith turned upfield and had plenty of time and space before sending a through ball to Adams who sprinted behind the last Garnet Charger defender. Adams received the pass and with Parker coming off her line, Adams took just one touch which was enough to shot on an open cage for the game-winner.

For Adams, that marked her second goal of the season, 38th of her career, and eighth game-winning goal. Smith tallied her first career assist on the play.

Wesleyan is back in action at home on Saturday with the Cardinals' NESCAC opener at Noon against No. 24 Hamilton.
