Maria Utz Nets Hat Trick as Cardinals Shut Out WPI

WORCESTER, MA. – The undefeated Wesleyan women's soccer team completed their third shutout in a row on Wednesday night, downing WPI in a 3-0 road victory that saw Maria Utz '27 net all three goals in her first career hat trick from WPI's H. Carr Field.

Ranked 12th in the nation following the first United Soccer Coaches poll of the season, the Cardinals went to work early and soon saw Utz's first goal in the 15th minute. Utz's hat trick is the first for the Cardinals since Oct. of 2023.

On a long throw from the far line down in the Engineers' zone, the ball landed inside the arc and the clear by the Engineers was whiffed by a defender. Utz attacked from behind and landed the left foot shot on a rolling goal into the right corner.

Allowing just 10 more minutes to roll on the clock, Utz struck again to give the Cardinals a two-goal lead. Capitalizing on a solid clear by the Cardinals at the midfield, Beatrix Delaney '27 located Utz unguarded racing down to her left. Utz's shot from the top corner of the box found home in the right corner of the goal again.

The Cardinals entered the second half looking to build on Utz trajectory and the junior's first hat trick concluded in the 65th minute. Meredith Feiner '28 kept the Cardinals in bounds in a battle situated in front of the bench, making way for the pass to Utz gaining on the arc to take the shot from out above.

Leading with a shot margin of 18-4, Utz led the offense with five.

In goal, Molly Brumbach '26 earned her third shutout of the season making four saves. Maya Mussel and Ayla Verheul combined for five saves in goal for the Engineers.

The Cardinals return to action on Saturday, Sept. 13, when they host Hamilton in their first NESCAC matchup of the season at 11 a.m.
