SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Looking to complete a second straight 3-0 weekend, the Wesleyan volleyball team battled back from one set down to defeat the host Swarthmore in four sets before rolling in a three-set sweep of Skidmore to improve to 6-0 on the season.
Opening with Swarthmore, the Cardinals went down early, losing their first set of the season 25-21. The Garnet amassed 19 kills on 44 swings, hitting .318 as a team in the opening set, winning five of the last six points of the set to claim the win.
Wesleyan answered right back with a dominant showing in both the second and third sets. After Swarthmore hit .318 in the first set, Wesleyan held the Garnet to a -.118 showing in the second set with seven kills and 11 errors on 34 swings. The third set saw Wesleyan use an early 10-0 run to set the tone as the Cardinals won the frame 25-16.
The fourth set took a turn when it was tied 9-9 as Wesleyan won three unanswered points to start what turned into a 10-3 run. Now leading 19-12, the Cardinals looked to be in complete control until Swarthmore used a 5-0 run to ower the deficit to 22-21. After trading points, Wesleyan won the serve back on a
Siena Steines '28 kill and then the Cardinals got another Steines kill on match point to take a 25-22 fourth set win to clinch the victory.
Wesleyan hit .282 as a team with 54 kills and a season-high 10 service aces.
Sophia Lindus '26 posted her first double-double of the season with 14 kills and 12 digs to go along with a career-high five service aces. Steines matched her career-high with 14 kills while adding six digs.
Keira Sweetnam '27 hit .348 with nine kills and
Fiona LaCamera '27 added seven kills, three total blocks, and three digs.
Ali Landa '26 was excellent all match, closing out with 33 assists and 10 digs from the setter spot. That marked the eighth double-double of Landa's career.
Elliana Moreno '27 finished with a match-high 14 digs.
Finishing off the three-match stay in Swarthmore, the Cardinals took on Skidmore in a match that Wesleyan closed out in a sweep at 25-14, 25-15, 25-20.
Wesleyan could do no wrong in the first set, totaling 15 kills with one error on 33 swings, hitting .424 as a team. A 6-1 Cardinal first set run set the tone and Wesleyan finished wining 10 of the final 12 points in the frame.
Skidmore held a 12-11 lead in the second set, but the Cardinals finished with a flurry as Wesleyan used an 11-2 run including seven unanswered points to win the set. Skidmore again put up a fight in the third set, leading 10-8 and later using a 7-1 run to close the deficit to 18-17. But it was the Cardinals who again fnished strong behind the play of Steines who had three kills and a solo block to help Wesleyan win six of the final eight points.
Steines finished with 12 kills, hitting .458 on 24 swings, which marks her third straight match with double-digit kills. LaCamera hit .636 with seven kills and no errors on 11 swings while adding four digs, three service aces, and two total blocks.
Mila Chan '28 had five kills and eight digs while
Alexa Schnell '29 finished with 16 assists and seven digs and Landa totaled 16 assists and four digs. Moreno had 12 digs and two service aces.
After six striaght matches played away from home to start the campaign, Wesleyan is back in Silloway Gymnasium on Friday night with a 7 PM clash with Colby (9-0) in a battle of unbeatens.
