Box Score MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – One of the best hitting teams in the nation was at its very best on Saturday, as the No. 22 ranked Wesleyan volleyball team hit a season-high .398 on their way to a sweep of Endicott (25-14, 25-22, 25-16) on Saturday night from Silloway Gymnasium. The Cardinals get back in the win column, improving to 9-1, while the Gulls drop to 6-7 on the year.
Coming into the contest ranked Top 10 in the nation in attack percentage, the Cardinals went off for 45 kills and just six attack errors on 98 attempts, on their way to a .398 attack percentage. The Cardinals added nine total blocks and seven service aces to land a convincing win over Endicott.
In what was her first career start in the red and black, sophomore transfer
Mila Chan was lethal on attack, generating 11 kills with 0 errors on 17 attempts, giving her a .647 attack percentage.
Siena Steines '28 nearly matched Chan, totaling nine kills with 0 errors on 14 attempts, hitting .643 for the match with three total blocks.
Katelyn Olin '27 added five kills and six total blocks while
Fiona LaCamera '27 hit .500 with four kills on eight attempts to go along with three blocks and two aces.
Wesleyan set the tone right from the start, hitting .515 in the first set with 18 kills and 1 error coming on 33 attempts. Trailing 5-1 in the early going, Wesleyan used separate runs of 3-0, 4-0, and 7-0 to turn a deficit into a 20-11 lead. It was 21-14 Wesleyan before the Cardinals won four unanswered points to close out the 25-14 first set win.
After trading points in the early stages of the second set, the Cardinals won six straight points on a LaCamera service run to take a 11-6 lead. Wesleyan led by as many as seven points before seeing the Gulls stage a late comeback bid, closing the deficit to 23-21, but Steines closed out a 25-22 second set win with a kill.
The third set played out much like the first with Wesleyan hitting .393 in the frame, totaling 14 kills on 28 attempts to win the match on a 25-16 third set victory. The Cardinals benefitted from a 5-0 run to build a 12-5 lead, then held firm to the seven-point advantage before closing out the match with a 5-2 run that featured two Chan kills.
Wesleyan returns to NESCAC play next week with a mid-week Thursday night trip to Conn. College for a 7 PM start in New London.
