Ike Guttentag Victorious at 149; Wrestling Takes Sixth Place at the Will Abele Invitational

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Wesleyan wrestling team traveled to Ursinus on Saturday for the Will Abele Invitational and the Cardinals secured 116 total points to finish in sixth place out of 12 teams in the competition. Ike Guttentag '26 landed four wins, two of which were pins, to sweep his way to the 149-lb title competing as the top-seed in the weight class. Guttentag was ruthless on his way to the title match at 149, landing a 16-0 tech fall in the round of 16 followed by back-to-back pins in the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds. His first pin came in 2:09 while he needed just 48 seconds to send himself to the title match. Competing in the title match against two-seed James Linder Jr. of Western New England, Guttentag landed a crucial go-ahead takedown in the third period to earn a 10-6 win by decision.

Chris Hong '27 showed well in the 125-lb-bracket, earning three straight dominant wins as the two-seed before finishing as the runner-up in the weight class. Hong opened with a 17-2 tech fall before consecutive major decisions wins of 11-1 and 12-1 in the quarterfinal and semifinal, respectively. Hong was defeated by Shane Dobbins of Nassau in an 8-3 decision in the title match.

Michael Diorio '29 worked his way to a fourth place finish in the heavyweight class, opening with back-to-back-to-back pins in the main draw, earning a spot in the semifinals. Diorio was tech falled in the main draw semifinal round, but he had done enough to earn a spot in the third place bout which he forfeited to earn him fourth place in the bracket.

Roman Martinez '27 came back and landed a fifth place finish in the 184-lb bracket. Martinez posted a pin in 1:37 to start his consolation round action and followed with a 15-0 tech fall victory, sending him to the fifth place bout. Facing Ben Sanders of Ursinus, Martinez proved too much in a win by pin in 2:20.

At 197, first-time competitor Warren Little '27 made quite the impression, landing three wins to earn a seventh place finish. After falling to the top-seed in the main draw, Little wrestled his way to a pair of decision wins before taking an 8-0 major decision victory over Noah Foster of Nassau in the seventh place bout.

Ben Ronca '28 came in as the seven-seed at 174-lb and the sophomore earned a win in the seventh place bout to cap his three-win day. Ronca won his opening bout in the round of 16 in the main draw with a pin in 2:46. After losing in a decision, Ronca came back and won in a tech fall before a second decision loss sent him to the seventh place bout where he captured a pin to land his third win of the day.

Ronnie Christolin '28 placed eighth in the 157-lb flight, earning a pair of wins in the main draw before earning another in the consolation bracket before his run came to an end one win short of competing in the fifth place bout.

Owen Sheiman '29 landed three straight extra point wins in the 149-lb consolation flight, securing a pin in 1:06 followed by a 12-1 major decision win, and finally a 16-1 tech fall in 3:00 completed his run of three straight wins.

The Cardinals are back in action next Sunday with the 2026 NEWA Dual Championships held in Providence.
