Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

No. 19 Men’s Basketball Taken Down in Final Seconds at Conn. College

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The No. 19 Wesleyan men's basketball team saw a 10-point second half lead slip away while Conn. College hit a go-ahead free throw with two seconds remaining to hang on for an 84-83 win on Saturday afternoon. Wesleyan (16-5, 6-1 NESCAC) sees their seven-game win streak snapped while the Camels (15-6, 3-4 NESCAC) defeat the Cardinals for the second straight meeting in New London.

Neither side led by more than two points for the final 3+ minutes of play as Zach Wolinski '28 hit a go-ahead three with 2:54 remaining. Dylan Watson followed with a pair of free throws to make 81-80 Conn before Oscar Edelman '28 hit a triple with 2:05 remaining to restore a two-point Cardinal lead.

Watson again stepped to the line and hit game-tying free throws, setting the stage for a frantic final minute where Greg Cantwell was stripped by Wolinski before Elias Espinosa knocked the ball loose from Wolinski in transition with under 10 seconds left. Moving the ball quickly upcourt, Watson was fouled on a drive and hit 1-of-2 free throws with just two seconds showing on the clock.

Securing the rebound on the missed free throw, Wesleyan called timeout, setting up a last second halfcourt heave from Jaalan Watson '29 that came up short as the Camels walked away with the 84-83 win.

Conn led by as many as eight in the early going thanks to a fast start. The Cardinals answered back to tie the score at 22-22 with 8:03 left in the half and continued to push, leading by eight with one minute left before halftime. Conn, however, closed the half with a pair of baskets including a three from Espinosa to make it 42-39 Wesleyan at the break.

That momentum carried over into the second half as the Camels took a two-point lead, until Wesleyan went on a 11-0 run to lead 57-47 with 15:26 remaining. Wolinski scored the final eight points in that 11-point swing for the Cardinals as the sophomore guard poured in 18 of his game-high 25 points after halftime.

The Camels answered that double-digit point run and eventually took the lead behind 10 unanswered points bookended by triples from Espinosa and Greg Cantwell, leaving the Camels out in front 72-65 with 7:16 to play.

Wesleyan worked their way back in the game and the final 3+ minutes saw the lead change hands four times before the final buzzer.

Wolinski netted 25 points on 8-for-17 shooting with four rebounds and two steals. Edelman went 3-for-7 from deep on his way to a 12-point game. Sam Pohlman '26 finished with 10 points, six assists and four rebounds in just 22 minutes as the senior guard fouled out late in the second half. Ben Lyttle '27 had nine points and 10 rebounds (six offensive) off the bench.

The Cardinals are back in action next Sunday with a 1 PM tip against Bates on Super Bowl Sunday from Silloway Gym.
