Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Wesleyan Falls at Amherst, 53-45

AMHERST, Mass. – The Wesleyan men's basketball team suffered a 53-45 defeat at Amherst on Sunday afternoon in a Little Three non-league contest. The Cardinals fall to 9-4 on the season with the loss while the Mammoths improve to 10-3.

Points came at a premium in this Little Three tussle, with both defenses dominating the action throughout. The Cardinals shot 28.1 percent from the floor while Amherst shot 25 percent in the second half and 34.6 percent for the game, but never trailed as the Mammoths led wire-to-wire in a big home win.

After nearly three minutes without any points scored following the opening tip, Amherst blitzed the Cardinals with a three-point barrage. Amherst canned three triples in a span of 3+ minutes to ignite a 17-2 run.

Following a Wesleyan timeout, the Cardinals worked their way back into the game, utilizing a 15-5 run, cutting the Mammoth lead down to five points. Amherst, however, was quick with the response as seven unanswered points made it 29-17 Amherst before Zach Wolinski '28 connected from deep as the Cardinals trailed by nine at halftime.

The two sides traded baskets for the first few minutes of the second half before a 3+ minute span wherein neither team scored a point. Josh Cameron '27 broke that scoreless drought with a layup and followed with another make on the next possession to make it a four-point game with 10:29 remaining.

Chris Hammond came up with a big three-point make with 7:27 left, which was the last made field goal for either team for more than six straight minutes. Amherst held a 45-37 lead during that entire 6+ minute span, with Charlie Moore '27 finally breaking the deadlock with a three-point make with 1:21 left.

Despite the Moore make, Amherst was able to convert their free throws down the stretch to ice away the eight-point home win.

Wolinski was the only Cardinal to score in double figures as the sophomore guard finished with 12 points. Sam Pohlman '26 tallied eight points and four assists. Fritz Hauser '26 had five points and nine rebounds.

Hammond was the difference in the game as the senior forward netted a game-high 20 points on 8-for-12 shooting and 4-of-6 from three. K.J. Neville totaled 12 points and 11 rebounds while Elias Chin had 11 points, seven rebounds, five assists, three blocks, and two steals.

Wesleyan is back on the road for the start of NESCAC play as the Cardinals head to Williams on Friday night and Middlebury on Saturday afternoon.
