BRUNSWICK, ME. – Following two days of competition at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's New England Regional tournament at Bowdoin College, sophomore
Mariia Kornilova will represent the Wesleyan women's tennis team in the A Draw semifinal round on Sunday afternoon with a chance for the championship in the balance.
The Cardinals, fresh off the 2026 National Championship title in May, took to Bowdoin for the first action of the academic year with seven competing in the singles draws.
Kornilova's dominant performance in the quarterfinals resulted in a 7-6, 6-0 victory over Bowdoin's Julia Ross. A 7-6, 6-2 win in the Round of 16 saw Kornilova advance over Middlebury's Diya Pachumuchu. Kornilova will face Katie Driscoll of MIT in the first of the semifinal matches.

Kendall Smith '29 and freshmen
Kayla Mitchell '30 highlighted the Cardinals' presence in the later rounds. Smith reached the Round of 16 with a 6-3, 4-6, 11-9 win over MIT's Claire Zhou before falling to Babson's Elizabeth Shu. Mitchell, also at 16, went 6-3, 6-0 over Babson's Jolie Wang before a defeat to Amherst star Tina She.
Seeing doubles action, the Cardinals had two pairings reach the regional quarterfinal round. In the Round of 16 Mitchell and
Agnes Guggenheim '29 defeated Greta Stechschulte and Ruzi Iscen of Amherst 8-4 but fell to Babson's Sandra Sikharulidze and Shu.
Lara Afolayanka '29 and
Lucinda Gatsiounis '28 went 8-7 (5) over Zoe Yao and Katelyn Wu of Williams with a quarterfinal loss to Bowdoin's own Caroline Stuhlfaut and Zoe Sun.
Semifinal action for the Single A Draw begins at 1 p.m.
