Cardinals Best Colby in 2-1 Conquest at Home

MIDDLETOWN, CT. – Ethan Davidson's '26 two-point night led he Wesleyan men's ice hockey team on Friday as Wesleyan defeated Colby College in a 2-1 NESCAC victory to place Wesleyan fifth in the conference standings. Davidson assisted on both goals scored at Spurrier-Snyder Arena.

Splitting the season series with the Mules 1-1 in the final regular season meeting, the Cardinals (8-13-0 overall, 7-8-0 NESCAC) were gifted a goal late in the first period by Owen Mahar '29 to take a one-goal lead. The Mules (9-10-2 overall, 5-9-1 NESCAC) won the faceoff and quickly lost possession with the Cardinals continually crowding goaltender Cooper Rautenstrauch. Freeing the puck from the end boards, Joe Calo '26 cleared to Davidson behind Rautenstrauch and Mahar was unattended above the right post. Unhappy with the results, the Mules used the final five minutes of the period to launch a blitz to remedy the score but were unsuccessful.

Entering the second period, the Cardinals found themselves on the power play as the Mules were called for a hold. Mahar's draw win fell back to Davidson and Dylan Margel '29 at the point, Daniel Lurie's '26 strike from inside the near circle lifted the Cardinals to a two-goal lead. Despite the score, the Mules' efforts tilted the scoring margin in their favor and broke the score in half with a third period goal. Max Abene slipped the puck behind Patrick McDevitt '28 at the left post.

Leading the way with four shots on Rautenstrauch, Andrew Haxton '28 finished the evening with four total shots while Colby Browne led all Mules with six.

In goal, McDevitt stopped 38 of 39 total shots. In the opposing goal Rautenstrauch finished with 22 saves.

The Cardinals return to action on Saturday, Feb. 14, when they host No. 9 Bowdoin at 3 p.m.
