WATERVILLE, ME. – An exciting opening period gave way to three goals as the Wesleyan women's ice hockey team traveled to Top 10 ranked Colby College on Friday evening, falling 3-2 in NESCAC action as a late third period tiebreaker closed the game at Jack Kelly Rink.
Tilting the matchup in their favor, the Mules took just five minutes to score the opening goal of the game. Molly Lefebvre managed a shot behind Cardinals' (5-14-2 overall, 2-10-1 NESCAC) goaltender
Sami Smith '27 before Sophia Kennedy gave cushion to the two-goal scoring lead by the Mules (15-4-1 overall, 9-3-1 NESCAC). The lead didn't last long. Three minutes later as the first period entered its' final minutes,
Beats Tura '26 cut the lead in half with assists made by
Dylan Green '26 and
Lilly Place '29.
With a history of comeback performances under the belt, the Cardinals entered the second period with a cold chip on their shoulder. The Cardinals were granted a second goal off the stick of
Caroline Kee '26, tying the game up at two with just five minutes remaining in the period.
Caroline Humber '29 and
Carly Ward '26 were credited with assists.
Scoring the game-winning goal late in the third period, Jo Tattersall's tiebreaking goal was the final of the night in the first game of the weekend series.
In goal, Smith saved 31 shots by the Mules. Ally Martiniello earned the win for the Mules with 22 stops.
The Cardinals face Colby for a second time on Saturday, Feb. 14, with action beginning at 3 p.m.
