Box Score SEWANEE, TN. – Sunday morning saw the No. 6 Wesleyan women's tennis team upset No. 3 Emory University, 4-3, at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Indoor National Championship, securing fifth place at the tournament as they return home to open the regular season.
The Cardinals are certainly no strangers to the Falcons, having met the continually top-ranked program multiple times in the post season over the years. The freshmen class led the charge, pinning victories down the singles lineup following the Falcons' doubles win.
Facing Iris Berman at No. 2,
Agnes Guggenheim '29 cleared through with a 6-2, 7-5 victory in a close call second set. At No 4,
Lara Afolayanka '29 defeated Yanire Marte, dropping just three games, for a 6-2, 6-1 final.
Mariia Kornilova '29 was the match point for the Cardinals at No. 6, running a 6-2, 6-4 match victory over Rachel Hernandez.
Natalia Leroy '28 forced a third set in her No. 5 matchup with Holyn Karp, winning two in a row after Karp took an early first set lead. Leroy's win came with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 tally.
The Cardinals return home to open the season against Williams on Saturday, March. 7, at 2 p.m. following the men's match.
