Cardinals Topple Dominican 10-9 in Extra Innings

DAVENPORT, FL. – After a late run sent the game to extra innings, the Wesleyan University baseball team pushed through to a game-winning run from Dylan Harrington '29, toppling Dominican University (Ill.) 10-9 as the team takes back-to-back victories while Spring Break competition continues in central Florida.

Jumping to a three-run lead at the top of the game, the Cardinals kicked off the action with Tucker DeWolf '28 leading off with a double to center field. Two stolen bases followed as Sam Hensinger '26 was walked, leaving Jonah Timmons '27 to bite a single to the short stop and send DeWolf home. Highlighting the inning, Kato Mangum '28 nailed a home run and followed Timmons to the plate.

The Stars recovered quickly, running back five runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a two-run lead that held through for another before the Cardinals bounced back and tied the game at five. Jack Acker '27 reached third base on a double to center from Sebastian Ortiz '28 and both scored with DeWolf back at the plate for another ball to center.

James Marsden's '26 heroics began the next inning, reaching with a double before Acker followed with is own double and left room for Marsden to round third and score. Acker stole third and advanced the score on a wild pitch.

Despite the Stars cutting the score to just one run with a sixth tally, the Cardinals held the one-run lead well into the ninth inning before Marsden could reach home again. An error at short stop brushed Marsden to third with Acker once again enabling space for Marsden's second run of the game. Mangum, sitting at second following Acker's single down the third base line, tallied a ninth run for the Cardinals with Oliver Kwan '28 ripping a ball to left field.

With game still to spare, the Stars scored three runs in a row, tying the game up at nine to force a 10th inning. Marsden's double out right placed Timmons on third before Harrington entered the game as the pinch runner for Timmons. A wild pitch pushed Marsden down the line, forcing Harrington home for the Cardinals lead.

The bottom of the inning saw several lineup changes for the Cardinals, notably Marsden as the closing pitcher. With only a walk to his record, Marsden held up the Cardinals lead through a quick three outs.

Cole Perkin '28 pitched four innings, striking out five while allowing six runs. Conor Humowiecki '29 struck out seven batters through four innings, dropping three runs.

The Cardinals return to action on Saturday, March 14, for a doubleheader with Penn State Abington beginning at 3:45 p.m.
