#4 Women’s Tennis Outlasted by #2 Wash U in 4-3 Defeat

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. -  Opening Spring Break play on Friday afternoon, the Wesleyan women's tennis team fell in non-conference against to second-ranked Washington University in St. Louis in a 4-3 setback in the first meeting between the elite programs this season.

Dodging the Cardinals through doubles, the Bears picked up all three doubles matches for an early 1-0 lead heading into individual play.

Laying a crushing blow at No. 5, Mariia Kornilova '29 took Amber Edmonds out of contention in a 7-5, 7-5 victory as the Cardinals tried to rally a comeback. At No. 6, Kendall Smith '29 was forced to a third set tiebreak after Nina Moravek put away a second set win. Smith carried herself to a Cardinals win in a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 final.

Another three set triumph fell to Natalia Leroy '28 at No. 4, facing Ally Lin for a second time. Lin was the winner of set one, but it was Leroy that ran two set wins in a row through the tiebreak to finish 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.

The Cardinals return to the court on Saturday, March 14, when they face No. 5 Emory for a second time this season at 10 a.m.
