MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The No. 2 Wesleyan women's lacrosse team exacted some revenge on No. 7 Colby, landing a 10-4 win over the Mules on Saturday afternoon from Smith Field. In a dominant defensive performance, the Cardinals (4-0, 2-0 NESCAC) snapped a seven-game losing streak to the Mules (1-3, 0-3 NESCAC) and exacted some revenge on a Colby team that knocked Wesleyan out of the NCAA Tournament in each of the past two seasons.
A thoroughly dominant display from the Wesleyan defense saw the Cardinals force Colby into 25 turnovers while the Mules could only muster 15 total shots and didn't attempt a single free position shot in the contest. Wesleyan's defense totaled 21 caused turnovers, a single-game record for the Cardinals against a NESCAC opponent. The four goals is the fewest Colby has scored in a single-game since the 2022 season.
A host of Cardinals had career days including
Lindsey Diomede '26 who totaled a career-high six caused turnovers, which is the most by a Cardinal since Molly Greer '24 had six CT's in games against Trinity and Hamilton in 2024.
Elise Kurtis '29 continues to shine as the first-year totaled eight ground balls, the most by a Cardinal in a game since 2018 and the most by a Wesleyan field player since 2011, to go along with three caused turnovers.
Bridget Horst '26 had a career-high four caused turnovers while she tied her career-high with four ground balls.
Molly Simon '26 tied her career-high with four caused turnovers.
Kate Tracy '27 continues to shine at midfield, totaling three ground balls and a career-best two caused turnovers. From the few Colby possessions that ended in a shot,
Izzy Weintraub '26 did well to keep the ball out as she finished with seven saves and four goals allowed while playing the full 60 minutes.
Dealing with cold weather and brutal wind gusts, neither side could generate much offensively in the opening quarter. Just eight total shots were attempted between the two teams, but Wesleyan made the most of their chances, scoring twice on three shot attempts in the frame.
Maddie Shoemaker '27 spun around her defender before finding the net nearly nine minutes into play, then
Dylan Green '26 scored with 29 seconds left to make it 2-0 Wesleyan after one.
The Cardinals made their move in the second quarter, scoring four more to extend their streak to six unanswered goals.
Kyra Browne '26 worked the ball to the near post before slipping a pass to
Abby Galaris '29 right in front who still had a lot to do before slipping the ball past Gigi Peloso on the lower right side of cage.
Addie Cummings '26 scored on a player-up advantage nearly four minutes later before Green scored again and Horst found the back of the net on a drive to cage. Colby fired in their first of the day, breaking a scoreless streak of nearly 28 minutes, to head into halftime trailing 6-1.
Wesleyan scored three of the first four goals of the second half to take their biggest lead of the contest at 9-2. Shoemaker completed her hat trick within the first five minutes of the second half and
Elle Priesing '26 scored on a free position to make it a seven-goal advantage. The Mules answered with two goals in a span of 1:07 to trail by five entering the fourth quarter.
Riding a two-goal scoring streak, Colby had first possession of the fourth quarter, only to see Joselyn Silva denied right in front by Weintraub to snuff out the Colby momentum. Weintraub made another stop five minutes later before Shoemaker scored her fourth of the game to add an insurance goal and complete the scoring at 10-4 Wesleyan.
Shoemaker was the key threat on attack as she scored four of the 10 total goals scored for the Cardinals, giving her a team-leading 10 goals on the season. Priesing had two points (one goal, one assist) while Green had a two-goal game.
The Cardinals head on the road twice next week for a Tuesday afternoon tilt at Endicott and a Saturday afternoon trip to Bowdoin.
