Softball Falls to No. 14 Wisconsin-Whitewater and Wellesley in Final Day of Florida Trip

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Wesleyan softball team dropped both ends of a Tuesday doubleheader in what was the final day of competition for the Cardinals in Florida for the team's annual Spring Break trip. The Cardinals fell to No. 14 Wisconsin-Whitewater 5-3 and Wellesley 6-0 and fly back to Middletown with a 6-5 record.

Facing off against a Top 25 ranked team in Wisconsin-Whitewater in game one, the Cardinals held Warhawks scoreless through four innings and took a 1-0 lead in the 5th. Wesleyan starting pitcher Jacelyn Lees '28 worked her way through a potent lineup, leaving at least one runner stranded in each of the first four innings.

The Cardinals took the lead in the 5th as the first three batters in the inning all reached base. Waverly Smart '27 reached first on an error, then advanced to second on a Whitney Gigante '28 walk. Pinch hitter Naomi Tesoriere '29 came through with a clutch RBI single to left center that plated Smart from second.

Heading into the bottom of the 5th, Lees retired two of the first three batters but couldn't finish off the frame as Grace Grabowy legged out an infield single then Dani Peshia came through with a go-ahead two-run double to right center. Emma Giese followed with an infield single to third and it was 3-1 Warhawks.

Whitewater tacked on two more runs in the 6th, leading 5-1 heading into the 7th where the Cardinals made it interesting. Molly Lennon '26 sent a two-run triple out to right center with two outs, putting the game-tying run at the plate, but Sam Chappell '28 flied out to center to end a back-and-forth contest.

In the nightcap against Wellesley, the Cardinals couldn't solve Sarah Wicker in the circle as the Blue starting pitcher Sarah Wicker who had a no-hitter going through 4.1 innings. Wicker finished the game with just one hit and one walk allowed.

Ella DeCrescenzo '27 retired Wicker on an inning-ending strikeout in the top of the 3rd with Wellesley having the bases loaded. The Blue then found an answer in the 4th with a three-run inning coming on two hits and one error. Wesleyan stranded two runners in the bottom of the 4th and Wellesley added two more runs in the 6th and one more in the 7th before Wicker finishing the game off by striking out the side in the bottom of the 7th.

Wesleyan is back in action with a quick road trip to Maine as the Cardinals travel to face Bowdoin for a NESCAC-opening doubleheader on Friday starting at Noon.
