BRUNSWICK, Me. – Trailing midway through the second quarter, the No. 2 Wesleyan women's lacrosse team scored three unanswered and would ultimately surge forward to secure a 14-9 win over Bowdoin on Saturday afternoon. The win secures the first 6-0 start to a season in team history for the Cardinals while Bowdoin (2-4, 0-4 NESCAC) is still searching for their first league win.
An explosive start to this one saw the two sides combined to score goals on the opening three possessions of the contest. Nearly 10 scoreless minutes followed the three-goal start, as Bowdoin and Wesleyan traded goals at the end of the frame.
Izzy Weintraub '26 shined in the second quarter for the Cardinals, making three saves in the period to keep the game within reach.
Kyra Browne '26 and
Abby Galaris '29 scored early in the period before the Cardinals closed the first half with three unanswered goals.
Addie Cummings '26 found the back of the net on a free position to start the 3-0 run before
Lindsey Diomede '26 converted a player-up opportunity and
Mya Waryas '27 finished off the half with a goal to make it 7-5 Wesleyan at halftime.
Grace Schorr scored for Bowdoin to open the second half, but Wesleyan answered back with Cummings scoring back-to-back goals in a span of 38 seconds to make it 9-6 Cardinals.
Holding a 10-7 lead to start the fourth quarter,
Maddie Shoemaker '27 scored her first of two goals just 49 seconds in. Then Shoemaker scored again, this time on the player-up, then Cummings netted her fourth to give Wesleyan their largest lead of the game at 13-8 with 7:56 remaining.
The Cardinal defense took care of the rest, holding Bowdoin to just three shots with seven turnovers in the fourth quarter alone. Diomede was sensational all over the field on Saturday, registering a career-high six ground balls, five caused turnovers, three draw controls, and two goals for her first multi-goal game of the season and the eighth of her career. Horst joined in with a career-high four points (two goals, two assists), four draw controls, and two ground balls.
Cummings led the attack with her first career four-goal game.
Dylan Green '26 finished with one goal and two assists. Shoemaker (two goals), Waryas (one goal, one assist),
Elle Priesing '26 (two assists), and
Becca Dibble '26 (two assists) each added two points.
Kate Tracy '27 added two caused turnovers and two ground balls.
Molly Simon '26 registered three ground balls and one caused turnover while
Hannah Gilliam '28 had two ground balls and one caused turnover. Weintraub played well in cage, making a season-high eight saves for the win.
The Cardinals have a full week to prepare for back-to-back home games next weekend as Wesleyan welcomes Hamilton on Saturday (12 PM) and MIT on Sunday (1 PM).
