HARTFORD, CT. – Making quick work of a mid-week NESCAC matchup with an in-state rival, the Wesleyan women's tennis team swept Trinity College in a 7-0 shutout on Wednesday evening, improving to 8-2 on the season as conference play continues.
Leading the way through singles domination,
Mariia Kornilova '29 turned out win over Hellena Trojer at No. 4, dropping just one point in set one to finish with a 6-1, 6-0 final.
Kendall Smith '29 pulled the complete sweep with a perfect match, running 6-0, 6-0 over Madison Damond at No. 5.
Dropping a 6-1, 6-1 final over Elise Brennan,
Agnes Guggenheim '29 was the next Cardinal to complete a win on the books as the No. 2. Facing Emilia Romano at No. 3,
Lara Afolayanka '29 cleared a 6-2, 6-4 victory to give the Cardinals a four-match lead.
Making her singles debut on the season,
Alexandra Burnett '27 defeated Jahnvai Vaghasia 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6, marking her first win of the year. Captaining the ship at No. 1,
Leila Epstein '26 finished the match with a 6-3, 6-2 final score over Kendall Cedar.
The Cardinals clinched an early doubles point prior to singles play with a complete sweep of all three matches. A 6-0 sweep went to Guggenheim and Afolayanka as the No. 2 pairing over Julia Clark and Brennan.
Lucinda Gatsiounis '28 and Epstein dropped only two to Naisha Rathi and Romano in a 6-2 triumph at No. 1. At No. 3, Smith and Kornilova also finished 6-2 with a win over Damond and Cedar.
The Cardinals return to action on Saturday, March 28, when they face Conn. at 10 a.m.
