No. 10 Men’s Lacrosse Comes-From-Behind to Defeat Hamilton, 10-9

Cardinals erase three-goal first half deficit to improve to 4-0 playing away from home this season

CLINTON, N.Y. – On a day that featured two mid-game blizzards, the No. 10 Wesleyan men's lacrosse team overcame multiple three-goal first half deficits before surging past Hamilton for a 10-9 win on Saturday from Steuben Field. The Cardinals (6-2, 2-2 NESCAC) improve to 4-0 playing away from home this season while the Continentals (5-4, 2-3 NESCAC) see their five-game unbeaten run come to an end.

Playing on a brutally cold and breezy Saturday afternoon, the Cardinals had trouble in the first quarter with Hamilton building a 4-1 lead thanks to four unanswered goals over the final 7+ minutes of the frame including a Thomas Healy goal with just eight seconds left on the clock. Wesleyan was outshot 10-3 and had eight turnovers in the period.

The script flipped in the second quarter as Wesleyan generated 13 shot attempts and committed just one turnover in the frame, leading to five goals on offense. Suiting up for the first time this season, Kyle Short '28 netted his first goal of the year to get the scoring started before Matt Morrow '27 scored consecutive Wesleyan goals just over three minutes apart.

Hamilton still held a 6-3 lead at one point in the second quarter before the Cardinals closed out the first half scoring three of the final four goals to close the deficit to 7-6 at halftime. Morrow completed his first half hat trick, scoring his third goal of the second quarter with 3:38 left to finish off a five-goal quarter for the Cardinals.

Conor Selfridge '26 stole the show in the third quarter as the Cardinal defense held Hamilton scoreless in the frame, with the senior goalkeeper making four saves in the period. The Cardinal offense couldn't capitalize until late when Gavin Lechner '27 found the back of the net to tie the score then Short put home an unassisted tally with just 13 seconds left in the frame to give the Cardinals their first lead since the early stages of the first quarter.

Wesleyan's defense continued to hold steady into the fourth quarter as Morrow's career-high fourth goal made it 9-7 then Will Miller '26 put home his first of the day to give Wesleyan a 10-7 advantage and finish off a 5-0 scoring run.

Hamilton put an end to a scoreless streak of more than 23 minutes with a Maddux Little goal then Carson Kraus scored with 1:26 left to make it a one-goal game. A slashing call on Joe Hurton '27 gave Hamilton a man-up opportunity but Wesleyan won the ensuing faceoff and Morrow had a chance to put the Cardinals back up by two, but his shot was saved by Jack Williams.

Hamilton cleared and called timeout to set up their offense on the man-up heading into the final minute of regulation. Coming out of the timeout, Kraus put a shot attempt on target, but it was Selfridge who came up with the stop and then the senior goalie reached behind the cage to snag the ground ball. Wesleyan cleared and ran out the clock from there to secure a crucial NESCAC road win.

Selfridge finished the day with 11 saves to pick up the win. Morrow finished with his first career four-goal game. Short scored twice in his season debut to go along with two caused turnovers and two ground balls while Lechner also netted two goals. Doug Rabin '26 finished with four ground balls, two caused turnovers, and one assist. Jack Stanislaw '27 led the faceoff unit going 5-for-8.

Wesleyan heads home for a pair of huge NESCAC showdowns next week as the Cardinals welcome Amherst on Wednesday night before hosting Middlebury next Saturday.
