MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Back-to-back complete game four hitters from
Ella DeCrescenzo '27 and
Whitney Gigante '28 powered the Wesleyan softball team to a Tuesday afternoon sweep of Coast Guard from the Wesleyan Softball Field. The Cardinals (11-8) up their win streak to four following a 4-2 win in game one and 3-0 victory in game two against the Bears (8-6).
Â
Just over 48 hours removed from recording her first career complete game on Sunday in a win over Hamilton, DeCrescenzo turned in another stellar outing in game one, going the distance on a four-hitter with just two unearned runs allowed. DeCrescenzo allowed just four hits (all singles) and two walks while she didn't allow a baserunner to reach scoring position from the fourth inning through the end of the seventh to record the win.
Â
The Cardinals jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in game one as
Rebecca Cassel-Siskind '26 sent a two-out RBI triple out to right center that scored
Waverly Smart '27 all the way from first. Coast Guard took advantage of a pair of Cardinal errors to plate two runs in the 3
rd but Wesleyan answered right back with
Kelly Baker '26 crushing a two-run center back up the middle to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 lead.
Â
While DeCrescenzo was making quick work of the Coast Guard lineup, Wesleyan tacked on a big insurance run in the 6
th as
Jordynn Killion '27 came through with a two-out RBI single on what was a full count at the plate to make it 4-2 Wesleyan. Another 1-2-3 inning for DeCrescenzo followed in the 7
th as the Cardinals secured the game one win.
Â
Baker went 2-for-3 with two RBI while
Cameron Maloney '29 recorded her first career double.
Â
The game two starter Gigante left two Coast Guard runners on-base in the 1
st and another in the 2
nd before the Cardinals made some noise in the bottom half. Cassel-Siskind walked with two outs and Gigante reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases for
Nicole Celi '27 who came through with a clutch two-run single out to center to give Wesleyan the 2-0 lead.
Â
The Cardinals added another in the 4
th with a Killion lead off walk before Smart laid a perfect sacrifice bunt down the first base line that saw Killion advance from first to third on the play. Cassel-Siskind delivered an RBI single out to right on the next at-bat to give Wesleyan a 3-0 lead.
Â
Gigante continued to mow through the Coast Guard lineup with just two baserunners reaching scoring position over the final six innings of play. After striking out nine batters through the first five innings, Gigante finished the game with a 1-2-3 7
th inning on a fly out, pop out, and groundout to secure the win.
Â
Gigante went the distance for the first time in her career, recording a six-hit complete game shutout with just one walk and a career-high nine strikeouts. She needed just 94 pitches to get through seven innings for the shutout win as her ERA for the season went down to 1.99 while she improved to 4-1 on the year.
Â
Wesleyan has the rest of the week to prepare for a Saturday Little Three doubleheader at Amherst starting at Noon.
