MIDDLETOWN, CT. – An eight-run seventh inning led to the defeat of the Wesleyan University baseball team on Tuesday evening, falling 12-1 to Eastern Connecticut State University in a non-conference matchup at Dresser Diamond.
Popping to an early one-run lead, the Cardinals (6-12 overall) put away a run from
Dylan Harrington '29 in the third inning following two scoreless innings thanks to the efforts of starting pitcher
Tanner Mahon '26. Mahon, making his second appearance of the season for the Cardinals, kept the Warriors (14-3 overall) at bay through three innings with just one hit allowed.
Harrington was walked at the bottom of the third by E.J. Nevills and was followed by second walk, this time for
Tucker DeWolf '28.
William Moore's '26 hit to center field gave way to Harrington's run, forcing a pitching change for the Warriors.
Facing the top of the fifth inning, the Warriors rallied four runs to surpass the Cardinals and followed with eight unanswered runs at the top of the seventh to secure the 12-1 win.
The Cardinals cycled five pitchers to the mound after Mahon with
Colin Lautzenheiser '28 taking the loss. Lautzenheiser pitched just over one inning, dropping four runs and seven hits without a strikeout.
Eric Mathewson, Nevill's reliever, earns the win the for the Warriors, pitching four innings as he struck out five batters and did not allow a single run.
The Cardinals return to NESCAC action on Friday, April 3, when they face Hamilton the road at 4 p.m.
