MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Wesleyan softball team suffered two losses on Saturday to Trinity in a doubleheader at home as the Cardinals fell 9-3 and 6-4 to the Bantams. Wesleyan (14-10, 4-6 NESCAC) is swept for the first time in conference play this season while Trinity (11-9, 4-4 NESCAC) bounces back from a four-game losing streak in league play.
Game one saw the two sides each plate one run in the 1
st before Trinity used a three-run 2
nd inning to take control. The bases were loaded for Emily Goddard with two outs and she came through with a bases-clearing double out to center to make it 4-1 Bantams.
The Bantams put the game on the brink of a mercy rule with a four-run 4
th, recording four hits and taking advantage of a pair of Wesleyan errors to push the margin up to 8-1.
It was 9-1 Trinity heading into the bottom of the 5
th where Wesleyan extended the game with a two-run inning.
Molly Lennon '26 and
Rebecca Cassel-Siskind '26 recorded back-to-back triples and
Cat Palmer '26 singled to second to lower the deficit to 9-3 but it was too little too late as Trinity secure the game one win.
Lennon went 2-for-3 with one triple, one walk and two runs scored while Palmer went 2-for-4 with two RBI. DeCrescenzo went 3.1 innings and allowed six earned runs.
Kelly Baker '26 tossed 3.2 innings in relief and allowed one run.
Game two was a pitchers' duel for the first 4+ innings as
Whitney Gigante '28 and Erin Connor mowed through the opposing lineups, neither allowing a run.
Wesleyan made the most of a Trinity fielding error in the 5
th and Lennon took advantage with an inside-the-park grand slam as she lifted a liner out to left where Haley dove and came up short of securing the ball in her glove. The ball rolled all the way to the wall and Lennon scored standing up to make it 4-0 Wesleyan after five.
Trinity answered right back with a three-run 6
th inning and then took the lead on a three-run 7
th inning as a passed ball allowed the game-tying run to score. Katie Ruffer then singled to right to score the go-ahead run from third. Another Bantam run came in on a throwing error and it was suddenly 6-4 Trinity heading into the bottom of the 7
th where Wesleyan was retired in-order.
Connor tossed a complete game four-hitter for Trinity with no walks while all four runs she allowed were unearned. Gigante went the distance for Wesleyan, allowing nine hits and two walks with four strikeouts.
Wesleyan heads on the road for a pair of doubleheaders next week as the Cardinals take on WestConn on Thursday and Bates on Sunday.
