Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

No. 2 Women’s Lacrosse Drops Overtime Heartbreaker to No. 3 Tufts, 11-10

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – A Top 5 matchup certainly lived up to the billing on Saturday afternoon as the two sides needed overtime to determine a winner. After securing the draw to start the extra session, No. 3 Tufts found the game-winning goal from Elsa Schutt to give the Jumbos a 11-10 win over No. 2 Wesleyan women's lacrosse from Smith Field.

This seesawing affair saw Wesleyan dominate the first quarter, with the hosts jumping out to a 3-1 lead thanks to goals from Mya Waryas '27, Becca Dibble '26, and Addie Cummings '26 while Izzy Weintraub '26 made two saves in the opening stanza. Waryas' goal came as she fell to the tuft while Dibble slammed home a picture-perfect feed from Waryas at the far post and Cummings wrapped around cage and fired a shot low and inside the right post.

Tufts then went on to dominate the next 20+ minutes as the Jumbos used a 7-1 run to open up a 8-4 lead early in the second half. Allie Zorn assisted on three straight Tufts goals in the scoring spree while Anna Mollahan and Eleanor Helm both scored twice in that run.

The visitors held a 10-6 lead late on in the third quarter before Wesleyan made their run, starting with Cummings scoring an unassisted marker at the 4:28 mark. Then Tufts goalkeeper Devon Chipman threw the ball into her own net on a clearance attempt late in the third quarter to make it 10-8 Tufts heading into the fourth.

Starting the fourth quarter with the ball, Wesleyan got another unassisted goal from Cummings on the opening possession to make it a one-goal game with 12:42 to play. It was then all squared at 10 apiece a few minutes later as Cummings again found the back of the net on an extended Wesleyan possession with 6:36 left in regulation.

Tufts was whistled for a green card with 3:26 left but Wesleyan could not take advantage, turning the ball over to Tufts with under two minutes to go. Schuyler Lloyd had a good attempt on-cage that Weintraub denied then Helm drove to the front of cage but a crease violation gave the ball back to the Cardinals before time ran out.

A crucial draw control to start overtime was secured by Lloyd and then late in the shot clock, Elsa Schutt drove towards the crease and shielded off multiple defenders before sliding home the game-winner. A lengthy video review followed the Schutt game-winner but the call on the field stood and the Jumbos celebrated a thrilling win.

Stats were level nearly across the board other than draw controls, which Tufts held a healthy 15-8 advantage for the contest including a 12-3 margin in the second and third quarters combined.

Cummings was the best offensive player on the field, finishing with five goals and two assists for a seven-point game. She either scored or assisted on seven of the 10 goals scored by the Cardinals. Caroline Cervini '27 had a career day with three points on two goals and one assist for her first career multi-goal game.

Lindsey Diomede '26 finished with five caused turnovers and three ground balls. Molly Simon '26 totaled five caused turnovers and two ground balls while Elise Kurtis '29 led the team with six ground balls. Weintraub finished with eight saves in cage.

Wesleyan is back in action at home on Sunday with a 2 PM start against No. 7 William Smith.
