Baseball Narrowly Defeated by Middlebury, 7-6

MIDDLETOWN, CT. - Opening the final NESCAC home stand of the season, the Wesleyan University baseball team saw a narrow defeat as a sixth-inning comeback propelled Middlebury College to a 7-6 divisional win on Friday night from Wesleyan's Dresser Diamond.

Despite the Panthers'(15-10 overall, 3-4 NESCAC W) best efforts to lay early groundwork with a run in the second inning, the Cardinals (10-16 overall, 6-4 NESCAC W) quickly answered and cruised to a four-run lead at the bottom of the inning. Sam Hensinger '26 tied the game at one, Kato Mangum '28 batting a single to the left. Jonah Timmons '27 handed the Cardinals the lead following a passed ball to place him at third, scoring with help from Sebastian Ortiz '28 batting a single to left field.

With three more runs to go in the innings, Mangum rallied to his own run on a wild pitch, advancing Tucker DeWolf '28 and Ortiz in the process. With Matthew DeBenedictis '29 up to bat, both DeWolf and Ortiz scored on the RBI single.

The Cardinals would not score again until the fifth inning, but thanks to Cole Perkin '28, neither did the Panthers. Through nearly five innings, Perkin dropped five hits and just one run before the Panthers attempted the sixth-inning comeback. Oliver Kwan '28 was the Cardinals' sixth and final run of the game, reaching home as Timmons doubled to center. The Panthers answered and brought the game within one run following four tallies including a double RBI that forced a pitching change to bring Tanner Mahon '27 into the game.

Tying the game up at six, the Panthers touted a run in the seventh and stole the lead in the eighth with a seventh run with the Cardinals unable to make up for the lost ground.

Perkin finished with six strike outs and one walk following his time on the mound. Mahon struck out one batter, but it was Kevin Brown '28 that recorded the loss, closing two innings with two strike outs and one dropped run.

The Cardinals return to action on Saturday, April 18, to celebrate the Class of 2026, facing Middlebury in a NESCAC doubleheader with games beginning at 12 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
