Cardinals Smash Eight in Sixth Inning, Bypassing Albertus, 16-6

MIDDLETOWN, CT. – With play at Dresser Diamond ending for the regular season, the Wesleyan University baseball team smashed 16 runs to bypass Albertus Magnus College, 16-6, in non-conference action on Tuesday evening as James Marsden '26 led the way with a team-leading three runs.

Rebounding from a conference sweep over the weekend, the Cardinals found their footing in the second inning to catch the Falcons leading by three. Marsden's first inning run tied the game up at one but with four runs on the table, the Cardinals cut the lead to two as Kato Mangum '28 scored on Sebastian Ortiz's '28 single. Jake Acker '27 closed the margin to one run on the next play.

The Falcons placed a fifth run in the fourth but only narrowly held the lead into the following inning. Tucker DeWolf '28 returned a fourth run for the Cardinals with Sam Hensinger '26 putting a ball to right field and Marsden tied the game again at five with bases loaded as Acker walked. Ortiz walked on his next outing, leaving Hensinger to score the first leading run.

While the Falcons managed to close the gap again at six runs, Marsden scored his third and final run of the evening, giving the go-ahead for the Cardinals to plate seven more runs in the inning. Jonah Timmons '27 followed on an error. Acker's single to left field placed Hensinger home, forcing a pitching change for the Falcons but it did little to stop the Cardinals. Mangum was the next to score as Nathan Rivera walked Ortiz, Marcus Jang '26 and Acker tallied runs on Andrew DiBiasio's '29 hit to left field. Timmons answered with a single to the right, giving way to runs from DiBiasio and Ortiz.

As the game came to a close with the sun setting over Foss Hill, Cole Sipes '29 put away a run as the pinch runner for Acker and Jang capped the scoring with the 16th run on DiBiasio's sacrificed hit.

Timmons and Ortiz led all Cardinals with 4 RBI apiece, DiBiasio finished with 3 RBI. Marsden scored with the lone triple of the game while Hensinger led with two stolen bases.

Oliver Wyner '27 earns the wins for the Cardinals, pitching just over one inning. Wyner struck out one batter while allowing just one run.
The Cardinals return to action on Wednesday, April 22, when they travel to WestConn for a 3 p.m. non-conference match up.
