MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – In a near mirror image outcome to last Saturday's 11-3 Wesleyan victory over the Ephs, the three-seeded Cardinals once again dominated the six-seed Williams to the tone of a 14-3 win on Smith Field in the Quarterfinal round of the NESCAC Tournament. Wesleyan (14-2), who held the Ephs scoreless for nearly 50 straight minutes on Saturday, advances to the NESCAC Semifinals for the sixth straight season and will face the two-seed Tufts next Saturday at top-seed Middlebury.
Much like the meeting last Saturday, the Cardinals shut out the Ephs over the entire second and third quarters as Williams was held scoreless for more than 49 consecutive minutes in the 14-3 win. This comes just seven days removed from the 11-3 Wesleyan regular season win over Williams wherein the Ephs didn't score for over 43 straight minutes.
After making 12 saves in the 11-3 win over Williams last week, earning NESCAC Player of the Week and National Div. III Co-Defensive Player of the Week honors,
Izzy Weintraub '26 was at her very best again in this go-round, finishing with 10 saves including nine consecutive stops in the 49+ minute Williams scoreless streak. In the two games combined against Williams, Weintraub has 22 saves and just six goals allowed for a .786 save percentage.
On the offensive side of the ball, a pair of seniors showed well as
Dylan Green '26 recorded her first career five-goal game while
Elle Priesing '26 totaled two goals and two assists to match her season-high with four points.
Molly Simon '26 led the defenders with four caused turnovers, finishing just one shy of her career-high, while
Kyra Browne '26 had eight draw controls to help Wesleyan hold a commanding 14-5 edge in that department for the game.
The two sides traded blows in the first quarter, with each team scoring twice as Paige Nelson scored the first goal of the game before Green answered with a player-up tally at the 8:57 mark. Ainsley Abel gave the Ephs a short-lived 2-1 lead as
Mya Waryas '27 responded just 58 seconds later to tie the score at 2-2.
The Cardinals then seized full control of the contest in the second quarter, outscoring Williams 6-0 in the stanza while generating a massive 15-2 edge in shots while forcing five Williams turnovers. Green cashed in on a Cailin Morrissey green card with a player-up tally to start the quarter, then Abel was whistled for a locked in yellow card and the Cardinals made the Ephs pay with two more player-up goals from
Addie Cummings '26 and Priesing to make it 5-2.
Weintraub denied Coco Norman on a free position shot midway through the second quarter before Williams was held without a shot for the final 6+ minutes of the period. In that time, Wesleyan added three more goals with
Maddie Shoemaker '27 scoring on a free position before Green completed a first half hat trick with two more goals in a span of 29 seconds to make it 8-2 Wesleyan at halftime.
The one-sided affair continued in the third quarter as Wesleyan scored four more to build a double-digit lead and push the deficit into running time. Goals from
Bridget Horst '26, Priesing, and Green in a span of just over three minutes made it 12-2 Wesleyan while the Ephs were denied twice on free position shots by Weintraub and turned the ball over on their four other possessions in the quarter.
Waryas scored 46 seconds into the fourth and
Caroline Cervini '27 made it 14-2 Wesleyan with just under 10 minutes to go before Weintraub finished strong, making four more saves in the fourth quarter alone to finish off a 14-3 win.
Much credit goes to the Cardinal defense as Wesleyan held Williams to just three goals for the second time in seven days, while Frannie Donohut, the leading point producer in the NESCAC coming into play, was held without a point for the first time in 24 games. Donohue came in with 49 goals and 30 assists through 15 regular season games and the Cardinals held the senior attack to just three shots with no goals or assists and three turnovers.
Next up for the Cardinals is a showdown with the two-seed Tufts next Saturday in the Semifinal round of the NESCAC Tournament. The two sides held an epic clash in Middletown back on April 11 that went the way of the Jumbos in a 11-10 overtime win.
