POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - A low scoring series fell through for the Wesleyan University baseball team on Sunday afternoon as the team split the weekend doubleheader with Vassar College, Vassar taking the 2-1 series. Wesleyan shut out Vassar 2-0 in game one before falling 5-8 in seven innings.
Kato Mangum '28 was the highlight of the day, returning two runs for the Cardinals through a team total of seven runs.
Mangum reached first at the top of the second inning in game one, doubling to left field.
Sam Hensinger's '26 single down the middle on the next play gave way to Mangum's game-winning run. The Cardinals (12-20 overall) left several runners on base while traveling to the seventh inning to plate a second run.
Sebastian Ortiz '28 nailed a double down the line, advancing to third on
Tucker DeWolf's '28 sacrificed bunt. Ortiz scored with
James Marsden '26 at the plate to single through to the short stop.
Shamus Kelly '28 pitched four innings, striking out one batter without dropping a single run. He earns his fourth win of the season.
Cole Perkin '28 was credited with a save, pitching no-hit innings while striking out three.
Opening game two, Mangum was the first to reach home, stealing third before scoring as Hensinger reached first on an error. Hensinger scored his own run as
Marcus Jang '26 hit a double to the right. Ortiz picked up his RBI single on the next play, batting in Jang with a ball to left center.
Facing the top of the third, Marsden carried the offense, cuffing a ball to right field before stealing second and reaching third on an error by the catcher. Marsden scored with help from
Jonah Timmons hooking a single to the right. The Brewers answered at the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs to close the Cardinals' lead to just one run.
The Brewers secured the lead in the fifth inning, knocking two runners home on an RBI single down the base line before plating three more runs in the sixth.
Tucker DeWolf scored the final run of the afternoon in the seventh, making his way home on a wild pitch.
Colin Lautzenheiser '28 takes the loss, pitching two innings with two allowed runs and one strikeout. Marsden opened the game for the Cardinals, pitching three innings with three dropped runs.
The Cardinals return to action on Wednesday, April 29, when they face Nichols in the final game of the regular season at 4 p.m.
