No. 3 Women’s Tennis Tops Hamilton, Securing #1 Seed with Unmarred NESCAC Record

CLINTON, N.Y. – Undefeated in NESCAC play with a perfect 10-0 record, the third-ranked Wesleyan women's tennis team cleared Hamilton College in a 7-0 sweep on Sunday afternoon, securing the #1 seed in the regular season finale. Wesleyan advances to 15-2 on the season.

It is total world domination for the Cardinals having secured a seventh Little Three title all while toppling the NESCAC competition. With both seniors in the lineup, the Cardinals went to work dusting their hands of the weekend and sights set on the conference tournament.

Mariia Kornilova '29 and Kendall Smith '29 kicked of the afternoon point scoring as the first doubles match to finish at No. 3. The pair eclipsed Lila Freeman and Grace Qian, 6-1 and remain undefeated. At No. 2, Lara Afolayanka '29 and Sarah Youngberg '26 dropped just two points to Muhan Cui and Samantha Rainero in a 6-2 finish, clinching the lingering doubles point. A 6-3 final for Leila Epstein '26 and Lucinda Gatsiounis '28 over Priyanka Challapalli and Hannah Walpole at No. 1, pressed the match forward.

Facing Freeman at No. 6, Gatsiounis allowed a one-off point before returning the 6-1, 6-0 final. A complete sweep went to Youngberg at No. 4, defeating Rainero in a 6-0, 6-0 match win for the Cardinals.

Agnes Guggenheim '29 entered the lineup at No. 2, placing a 6-2, 6-0 win over Challapalli as the clinching fourth point. Epstein was next to follow, defeating Walpole 6-1, 6-1 at the top of the lineup. Kornilova rocked to a set one sweep as the No. 3, allowing just one in set two for a 6-0, 6-1 finish over Qian. The final point of the match went to Smith, sending a 6-2, 6-1 message to Cui at No. 5.

The Cardinals will face #8 Colby on Friday, May 1, in the opening round of the NESCAC Championship at Middlebury College.
