DUDLEY, MA. – The regular season finale for the Wesleyan University baseball team ended in a road loss to Nichols College on Wednesday evening, the 7-1 defeat running nine innings as Wesleyan was led by senior
James Marsden.
The Cardinals, finishing the regular season with a 12-21 overall record, began the afternoon contest with a strong outing as
Tucker DeWolf '28 led off with a single to the left and reached third base with Marsden on his heels. Two outs following Marsden's walk left both on base.
First to the board, the Bison (21-16 overall) placed three runs in the bottom of the inning and left the Cardinals behind. Marsden opened the fourth inning doubling down the right field line, giving the Cardinals a moment regroup before scoring with
Jonah Timmons '27 nailing an RBI single down the middle. Timmons reached third but was unable to score.
In response to Marsden's run, the Bison returned three more runs at the bottom of the fourth, pressing the lead to five runs. The eighth inning saw a final run scored by the Bison following a fourth pitching change for the Cardinals.
Oliver Wyner '27 opened the game on the mound for the Cardinals and took the loss following the opening campaign made by the Bison, dropping three earned runs and two hits.
Sebastian Fuentes '28 followed, pitching just over two innings as he struck out three batters, allowing three runs. Striking out two,
Ben Bryant '29 did not allow a run through two innings with just one hit managed.
The Cardinals finish the season third in the NESCAC West and will face Trinity, second in the NESCAC East, on Friday, May 1, at 3 p.m. in Hartford.
