Baseball Drops NESCAC Quarterfinal Opener to Trinity, 11-3

HARTFORD, CT. – A strong start for the  Wesleyan University baseball team fell in the bottom half of the game following four runs by Trinity College in the sixth inning of the NESCAC Championship quarterfinal, ending in an 11-3 loss for Wesleyan on Friday afternoon from DiBenedetto Stadium.

The Cardinals (12-22 overall) entered the tournament for the 14th time in program history, the first under head coach Matt Reynolds, having finished third in the NESCAC West. The highest finish in the conference since 2023, the Cardinals traveled to the neighboring Bantams (25-10), second in the NESCAC East, for the first game of the series.

James Marsden '26 was the catalyst for a brilliant start made by the Cardinals, homering in the first inning to right center field with William Moore '26 positioned at first base. The two-run lead held through a quick second inning and grew to three runs in the third.

Advancing to first after taking a hit from Bantams pitcher (-), Tucker DeWolf '28 stole second following Marsden's fly ball and scored the final run of the evening as Jonah Timmons '27 reached base thanks to an error made at second base.

The Bantams eventually answered, scoring two runs in the fourth to cut the Cardinals' lead to just one run. A homerun in the sixth by Timmy Tomizio gave the lead to the Bantams and the running continued with a home run from Tyler Bernstein to advance the Bantams to a 6-3 lead.

A seventh run for the Bantams fell in the seventh inning, but four in the bottom of the eighth sealed the game one victory.

Pitching five innings for the Cardinals, Tanner Mahon '27 takes the loss with two strike outs and five runs allowed. Joe Capano pitched all nine innings for the Bantams, dropping three runs while striking out seven batters.

The Cardinals and Bantams return to action on Saturday, May 2, with action beginning at 11 a.m.
