Baseball Knocked from NESCAC Tournament in Quarterfinal Doubleheader Split with Trinity

HARTFORD, CT. – After winning game one of Saturday afternoon's doubleheader 7-1, the Wesleyan University baseball team was knocked from the NESCAC Championship as Trinity College cleared a 12-2 victory in game two to win the quarterfinal series 2-1 from DeBenedetto Stadium.

Kato Mangum '28 was the scoring catalyst in game one, returning a run in the second inning to place the Cardinals on the board first. Mangum walked to open the inning, stealing third before scoring on a throwing error made by the Bantams catcher.

Batting a single to third base on a bunt, Jake Acker '27 reached first and scored as Mangum followed and doubled left field. Mangum plated his second run of the game on Sam Hensinger's '26 RBI double center. The Cardinals simmered to the seventh inning, Shamus Kelly '28 allowing one run in the sixth, but regained traction as Oliver Kwan '28 and Tucker DeWolf '28 scored runs on singles to right center field.

Following a pitching change for the Bantams, Acker homered at the top of the eighth to highlight game one. Kwan scored his second run of the afternoon in the final inning.

Kelly, serving a 5-3 record as he pitched his third complete game of the season, dropped just one run through nine innings and struck out 11 batters.

Game two fell in favor of the Bantams with six runs tallied by the top of the fourth inning. James Marsden '26 cut the scoring with the first run for the Cardinals, reaching home with bases loaded as Cole Sipes '29 was hit by the pitcher. The Bantams answered with four more runs in the following inning, leading by nine.

The Cardinals caught a minor break in the sixth as Acker doubled down the left field line, advancing to third before scoring on a third base error. The Bantams placed two more runs on the books and finished out the series to advance to the NESCAC semifinal.

Oliver Dmochowski '27 takes the loss, pitching two innings as he struck out two and dropped six runs.

The Cardinals finish the season with a 13-23 overall record and a 6-6 NESCAC record.
