BRISTOL, R.I. - The winning run continues for No. 10 ranked Wesleyan field hockey as the Cardinals toppled Roger Williams 3-1 on Tuesday night for a third straight road win to open the 2026 season. Wesleyan (3-0) saw three different players score including first career goals from first-years
Izzy Ounjian '30 and
Bridget FitzGerald '30 to take down the Hawks (5-2) who came in having won five of their first six games of the season.
Wesleyan dominated possession from the start, holding the Hawks without a shot for the entire first quarter. The Cardinals had four shot attempts, two of which were on-goal, in that opening frame but the game remained scoreless heading into the second quarter.
After
Keira O'Flynn '29 made a stop on a RWU shot just over 90 seconds into the second quarter, the Cardinals pilled on the pressure once again and ultimately got the opening goal on a penalty corner. The insert came to
Kenzie Mauro '27 who passed to
Emily Smith '29 on her left. Smith took a shot towards traffic in front of goal and
Izzy Ounjian '30 got a piece with her stick, deflecting in the opener for her first career goal.
Wesleyan quickly added another, again off a penalty corner, as the ball came to the stick of
Leila Feldman '28 on the left wing. Feldman took a shot that was initially blocked, but the ball came to the far post where
Bridget FitzGerald '30 was waiting to pounce, firing in her first career goal to make it 2-0 Cardinals just four minutes after Ounjian's tally.
The Hawks pulled one back early in the third quarter, as Eva Wood scored on a penalty corner in what was the first goal allowed by the Wesleyan defense this season, breaking a scoreless streak that lasted more than 150 minutes.
That momentum for the hosts, however, was quickly wiped away as the Cardinals scored right off the restart to restore a two-goal lead. Smith sent a through ball upfield to
Teddy Tolbert '28, who was one-on-one with the goalkeeper, and Tolbert punished the Hawks with her first goal of the season to make it 3-1 Wesleyan.
Roger Williams had a three-minute stretch in the third quarter that featured three shots and three penalty corners, but the Hawks couldn't find another goal and the two sides combined for just one shot in the fourth quarter as the Cardinals secured the win.
Wesleyan outshot the Hawks 14-9 for the contest while both teams had six penalty corners. O'Flynn got the win, making one save in the first half, while
Caroline Chung '28 entered at the start of the second half and made one save.
The Cardinals finish a four-game road swing to start the year with a trip to No. 15 Bowdoin on Saturday in what is the NESCAC opener for Wesleyan.
