Harper Cohn ' 30 scored her first career goal with just five minutes on the board, kickstarting a 4-1 win for the Wesleyan women's soccer team over No. 9 Middlebury College on Saturday afternoon. Senior captain
Maria Utz '27 scored two to open the 2026 season with a margin victory at Jackson Field.
The Cardinals came out swinging in the season opener, jumping the goal scoring early with just five minutes on the board as
Harper Cohn '30 put away her first career goal tally. Blazing through the middle, Cohn caught the quick pick up from
Taylor Hill '28 and launched the ball into the crossbar and over the fingers of Panthers' goalkeeper Frankie Marston.
Meredith Feiner '28 earns the second assist.
With 13 minutes underway Utz struck with her first of the morning, the momentum for the Cardinals clearing on the toes of freshman
Savannah Hyon. Hyon settled the ball just inside the midfield and sent it flying over the head of Utz and down for the tap in at the line.
As halftime began to descend on Jackson Field, the Cardinals took a three-goal lead over the Panthers with captain
Lanee Farr '27 scoring her first goal as a Cardinal in the 37
th minute. Farr forced a turnover in the Panthers' defensive zone and crashed through the defense to fire above the box and into the left corner with
Meghan Noe '27 earning the assist.
Leading through the half, Utz returned her second goal of the game and the final of the afternoon on a near mirrored play from Hyon. Hyon struck from inside the line, finding Utz skirting the penalty arch before putting the ball behind Marston in the 73
rd minute. The Panthers answered with less than 10 minutes remaining in the game, cutting back the Cardinals' shut out chances.
Sophomore goalkeepers
Marley Hansard and
Maggie di Rienzo split time with 45 minutes of action each, with di Rienzo making four saves in the second half. Marston finished for the Panthers with six saves.
The Cardinals return to action on Sunday, Sept. 6, when they travel to Clark for an 11 a.m. start.
