AT WESLEYAN 40, BOWDOIN 6
Saturday, October 31, 1992 at Middletown, Conn.
Game Notes:
Senior halfback Mike Muraca tied a Wesleyan team record by scoring five TDs for the second straight week as Wesleyan rolled past Bowdoin, 40-6.
Rushing for 83 yards on 20 carries, Muraca scored on runs of 5, 4, and 3 yards twice while also catching six passes for 97 yards, including a 19-yard TD reception, to up his season total to 14 TDs. He is now the Wesleyan single-season record holder for both rushing TDs with 12 and total TDs with 14. The previous marks were nine and 10, respectively.
The previous week, Muraca equalled the Wesleyan team record of five TDs in a game as Wesleyan defeated Amherst, 46-14. The first Wesleyan player to score five TDs in a game was H.G. Travis in a contest against Hamilton in 1918.
In boosting its record to 4-2 on the year by scoring 40 points or more for the third straight week, Wesleyan took advantage of six Bowdoin turnovers while not turning the ball over at all. Wesleyan intercepted five Bowdoin passes, with Rick Wilson picking off two of the five, and recovered one fumble.
Bowdoin, which fell to 2-3 on the year, averted a shutout when Eric LaPlaca scored on an 11-yard run early in the fourth quarter. LaPlaca rushed 15 times for 73 yards as Bowdoin amassed 336 yards and 21 first downs but could not overcome its mistakes. Wesleyan totaled 435 yards and 28 first downs.
