AT AMHERST 28, WESLEYAN 14
Saturday, October 23, 1999 at Amherst, Mass.
Game Notes:
Totally dominating the second half with a consistent ground game from tailbacks Kevin Kinnard and Okay Ugwonali and the pass-catching of Derrell Wright, Amherst (3-2) extended its win streak over Wesleyan (3-2) to six years in a row with a 28-14 victory.
With Kinnard (29-122) and Ugwonali (22-79) combining for over 200 yards of rushing and Wright making seven catches for 115 yards, Amherst rolled up 405 yards of total offense and extended its slim 15-14 halftime lead to a 14-point win. Wesleyan, ranked first in the NESCAC for total offense coming into the game, averaging 412 yards and 26 points a game, was held to just 12 offensive plays, five minutes of possession, three first downs (one via penalty) and 21 net yards in the second half. Of its 12 plays, Wesleyan gained yards only four times over the final 30 minutes as five passes were incomplete, one was intercepted and two rushes were sacks. Wesleyan's Matt Perceval, who entered the game ranked first among NCAA Division III players for receiving yards per game (173.0) and second in catches per game (10.5), was held to two catches for 18 yards as Wesleyan QB Jake Fay was limited to 5-of-18 passing for 76 yards after avering 276 yards a game coming into the contest.
Amherst QB Peter Honig had 199 yards of total offense, completing 11 of 22 passes for 149 yards and rushing 12 times for 50 yards. Amherst put the game away in the third quarter behind a 19-play, 81-yard march that consumed 11:05 despite moving into a stiff wind. Honig's two-yard run capped the march and put Amherst ahead, 21-14, and the Amherst defense did the rest.
Amherst had trailed in the game, 14-0, with seven minutes to go in the first half before scoring the final 28 points of the contest. Both Wesleyan TDs came on one-yard Larry Woolard runs as he leads Wesleyan in scoring this season with eight TDs.
