AT WESLEYAN 33, WILLIAMS 28
Saturday, November 6, 1999 at Middletown, Conn.
Game Notes:
Matt Perceval caught nine passes for 162 yards and four TDs while Larry Woolard rushed 26 times for 183 yards and a TD to pace a balanced Wesleyan (5-2) offense to a 33-28 victory over previously undefeated Williams (6-1). Wesleyan was the last team to beat Williams during the 1997 season as Williams came into the contest riding a 15-game win streak.
While Wesleyan mounted 445 yards of offense and 33 points, well over the season average allowed by Williams of 223.5 yards and 7.3 points, the Williams offense totaled 587 yards behind the passing of Sean Keenan (26-of-57, 404 yards, two TDs) and the running of Fred Storz (32 carries for 167 yards, two TDs). But Wesleyan used two Williams turnovers in the opening seven minutes to grab a 13-0 lead with Perceval catching passes of 16 and four yards to complete the short drives. Perceval's third TD catch of the game made it 19-0 before Williams closed the gap to 19-14 with two scores late in the first half.
Wesleyan took the opening kickoff of the second half and marched 63 yards on four plays, the big blow a 39-yard connection from Jake Fay to Perceval. Larry Woolard completed the drive with a six-yard run to make it 26-14. Woolard's 183 yards rushing was just seven yards shy of the Wesleyan single-game team record and exceeded his total for the season coming into the game as he had 56 carries for 165 yards over the opening six games.
For the game, Fay completed 15 of 32 passes for 242 yards and became the career passing yardage leader in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) as he has 6,389 yards, surpassing Joe Shield of Trinity, who had 6,225 from 1981-84. Williams twice closed to within five points in the fourth quarter but Wesleyan got control of the onside kick in the final two minutes when Williams touched the ball before it passed 10 yards and ran the clock down to 21 seconds before giving the ball to Williams at its 20. Williams got as far as its own 45 before a final desperation pass was batted down at the Wesleyan 10-yard line on the game's final play.
