Future Council Initiatives

Guest Speaker Series: Starting in the fall we hope to have created an Alumni of Color Guest Speaker Series that will be one Wednesday a month where we have a forum open to everyone on campus. -- Kadijah Mathews '18

Collective Meetings: Next year the council plans on holding meetings bimonthly for everyone in the collective. This idea was inspired after the conference call with Amherst in which they shared that their collective holds meetings once a week. Since one of the main efforts next semester is to increase the visibility and participation in the collective, we have decided to hold meetings every other Sunday rather than every Sunday. The main topics of discussion will be the projects that council members are working on. This will facilitate an open discussion with collective members and serve as a productive setting to get their input on events. It will also be an opportunity for students in the collective who are wanting to get more involved to offer their help. In addition, weekly emails will be sent both recapping the meeting and relaying information about important events on campus. This will hopefully help foster a greater collective involvement on campus. -- Mackenzie Mitchell '20

Freshmen Intro Meeting: We would like to hold a meeting for all the freshmen of color, in hope of having them join the collective and to help ease the transition into collegiate athletics. This meeting will be followed by another event, potentially an ice cream social, to encourage communication between the older members of the council, and the newer members. Our goal is to have the initial meeting and the social within the first two weeks, as we understand this time is crucial for freshmen in organizing their schedules, prioritizing their commitments and building relationships. Additionally, we would like to spread more awareness about the council by having a table at Usdan during some lunch hours, as well as having a table at the club fair, so that more freshmen know about the council and how they can get involved. We believe beginning this process early will result in a larger, more cohesive collective, as well as provide us with more time to coordinate events throughout the year. -- Chynna Bailey '19

Social Justice Training: Next year, the council wishes to provide Social Justice Training for athletes on campus to bridge the gap between athletics and the greater Wesleyan community. This seeks to help student-athletes to understand the social history of their peers and create an environment more conducive to the success of Student-Athletes of Color. -- Henry Martellier '19

Alumni of Color Tailgate/Brunch @ Homecoming: Next year, we would like to plan an event that will allow us to connect with alumni. During Homecoming, it would be a great opportunity to let former Student-Athletes of Color know about our council and how they could be involved. Establishing these connections will assist us in holding a guest speaker series, and garner support for our mission on this council. - Eli Blair-May '20
