Danielle Gervacio and Maeve Vitale powered the women's basketball team to a 73-57 win to defeat Swarthmore University in the Swarthmore Tip-Off Classic.
Swarthmore was able to build a six point lead in the first quarter, but a three-pointer by Kaylie Williams, who scored seven total points and a jumper by Kadijah Matthews, who totaled six points in the game, brought the lead down to one. Swarthmore would then go on a five point run to rebuild their lead back to six and they would take that lead into the second quarter, leading Wesleyan 19-13.
Swarthmore held the lead the entire second quarter, with the Cardinals falling behind by nine points early on in the quarter. The Cardinals slowly chipped away at the lead by taking advantage of Swarthmore sending them to the line. The Cardinals shot 85% from the free-throw line in the first half.
Wesleyan turned on the jets in the second half and finally took the lead back in the third quarter on a three pointer by Vitale, who finished the game with 18 points. Gervacio, who finished with a team high 19 points, added a three pointer of her own to allow Wesleyan to regain the lead after Swarthmore had tied the game with a three pointer by Jessica Jowdy, who finished the game with 16 points.
Brenna Diggins, who finished with nine points, added to the Wesleyan lead with a layup, giving them a five point lead with 2:41 remaining in the third. Kaylie Williams was able to grab eight rebounds while also chipping in seven points in the game for Wesleyan. The Cardinals would take a four point lead into the fourth, leading 52-48.
Wesleyan would build on their lead into the fourth as their defense held Swarthmore to just 17% shooting from the field. Abbey Deckard lead Swarthmore in scoring with 19 points. Wesleyan went onto win by 16, 73-57. Gervacio was named Most Outstanding Player and Vitale was named to the All-Tournament team
The Cardinals next game is 6PM Tuesday November 24 at Amherst.
