LEWISTON, Maine – The Wesleyan women's soccer team (5-2, 2-1) edged Bates, 2-1, for its second-straight NESCAC win. With the win, the Cardinals avenged their one-goal loss to the Bobcats (2-4, 0-4) from last season.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Wesleyan got on the board 11:07 into the game, after a throw-in from Julia Meehan deep in Bates territory. Melissa Wilhelm one-timed Meehan's throw-in to Gianna Argento, who tapped it into the bottom right corner of the goal for the 1-0 lead.
- The Cardinals had an opportunity to score again at the 21:04 mark, but Bates defender Sarah Gutch made a defensive save to keep it a one-goal game.
- Wesleyan's Argento added a second goal when she beat a Bobcat defender, before burying the ball in the upper left corner at the 27:03 mark.
- Argento looked for the hat-trick at the 48:57 mark, but a diving-Nuckols denied the chance.
- The Bobcats got on the board 62:04 into the contest after Wesleyan goalkeeper Zoe Cassels-Brown punched away an initial shot. Bates' Riley Turcotte collected the rebound, beating Cassels-Brown on the near side to make it 2-1.
- Bates had a chance to knot the game at the 81:01 mark when Olivia Amdur gathered a loose ball and rocketed a shot at the goal, but a diving-Cassels-Brown thwarted the opportunity for the equalizer.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Wesleyan held a 12-7 edge in shots and a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.
- Cassels-Brown was forced to make two stops in goal to pick up the win, while Nuckols made five saves in net for the Bobcats.
