Women's Soccer Earns 1-1 Draw With Hamilton

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – In a hard fought contest, the Wesleyan women's soccer team (5-2-1, 2-1-1) earned a 1-1 draw with Hamilton (3-2-2, 3-2-1) on Saturday afternoon. Down by one (1-0), Cardinal Liz Young netted a goal with 12 minutes remaining in regulation, forcing the contest into two sessions of scoreless overtime. This is the second year in a row that the two teams were forced into overtime.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wesleyan had a great opportunity to score 9:02 into the game. Kayla O'Brien dribbled past two Hamilton defenders, before rocketing a shot towards the top right of the goal. Continental goalkeeper Rachel Pike punched the ball up and over the goal, keeping the match scoreless.
  • Hamilton got on the board at the 32:08 mark when Maddie Dale riffled a shot from the right side of the field into the bottom left of the goal, making it 1-0.
  • Wesleyan's O'Brien had a chance to knot the game at the 70:46 mark, but Pike denied the opportunity.
  • The Cardinals netted the equalizer at the 78:17 mark after Ella Sinfield chipped the ball up to Young, before she buried the ball in the upper left corner of the goal.
  • Wesleyan had an opportunity to end the game with three minutes remaining in regulation, but Pike just got her hands on Meg Harrop's shot, forcing the contest into overtime.
  • The teams battled back and forth through two extra sessions, but neither team was able to come up with the equalizer.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Wesleyan's Zoe Cassels-Brown made nine saves during the tie, while Pike had 13 stops.

The Cardinals will play their third-straight NESCAC opponent when they entertain Trinity on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
